Why doctors says idly is preferable than dosa. eventhough both made from rice,avoid chutney and take sambar.
any food from high carb items like idly ,dosa,pongal shoots bloodsugar levels to dangerous levels.it is not what you eat that decides bloodsugar'it is the calorie value you get from foods that decides sugarlevels.dont load yourself with high caloric foods.see your diet is composed of complex carbs,proteins and healthy fats.do exercise to control sugar.
Your doctor should have told since idli is not made with oil. Though both are equally bad, in general research has shown genetically accepted food for your body (like idly, dosa in limited quantity if you are a South Indian) does less harm than trying something totally new as a diet.
I agree I am diabetic since 2004 now 73 years i am at control for blood sugar.
I am healthy and conduct all sorts of work . I eat ragi ball everyday miday meals . ragi is atom bomb which gives the strength.

The idli is steam cooked. Dosa is a charred(burnt) food. Idly raises blood sugar level faster than dosa. burnt foods raises blood sugars slowly
