I am a borderline case with a fasting level... - Diabetes India
I am a borderline case with a fasting level of 200 & post fasting 225. can i drink moderate amount of whisky everyday to relax myself.
You are not on borderline. You are seriously diabetic and you should take care of your condition forth with.Your priority should now be to control sugar level because diabetes and alcohol do not go together.Alcohol spikes the sugar level immediately after consumption and then suddenly drops steeply. That is not at all good for diabetes management. It adds useless alcohol to your system which you have to account for.As diabetics,we are susceptible to diabetic peripheral neuropathy and alcohol aggravates it.Better relax with pranayama or meditation or melodious music.
Your fasting blood sugar should be less than 100 mg/dL and post-prandial blood sugar <140 mg/dL.
You have not stated which anti-diabetic medication, you are taking. Some diabetic medications have adverse reactions with alcohol. For eg:-- Metformin may cause lactic acidosis in combination with alcohol.
Here are some other ways that alcohol can affect diabetes:--
* While moderate amounts of alcohol can cause blood sugar to rise, excess alcohol can actually decrease your blood sugar
level -- sometimes causing it to drop into dangerous levels.
* Beer and sweet wine contain carbohydrates and may raise blood sugar.
* Alcohol stimulates your appetite, which can cause you to overeat and may affect your blood sugar control.
* Alcohol can interfere with the positive effects of oral diabetes medicines or insulin.
* Alcohol may increase triglyceride levels.
* Alcohol may increase blood pressure.
* Alcohol can cause flushing, nausea, increased heart rate, and slurred speech.
