Western medicine considers diabetes as a metabolic disorder and not a disease and so cannot be cured but managed within limits. However, practitioners of ayurveda, homeopathy and unani systems treat it as a disease which can be cured. What ever be the system you choose to follow,it is advisable to monitor the progress at home using a glucometer.

As a diabetic for more than 17 years I am offering following suggestions which you may consider. They are some what general in nature but you can adapt them to suit your needs.

Management of sugar levels is a tough job but is not impossible if you realize that the task is essentially in your own hands. The doctor or dietician may guide you but ultimately it is you who has to put into practice all that has been learnt. Diet control makes maximum difference in a diabetic condition. Avoid sugar, sweets, and any food that is loaded with sugars like mango, banana etc. Also avoid vegetables like potato, beet, etc that grow underground and contain plenty of starch. Eat more of sprouts, vegetables and greens that give you fiber, minerals and vitamins. Eat less of rice, wheat and other cereals rich in carbohydrates and demand more insulin for converting to energy. The idea should be to reduce consumption by least 200 to 300 calories per day to gain significant results.

After diet, exercise plays a very important role. Walking or jogging for 40 to 60 minutes a day will improve your glucose metabolism significantly and spend about 200 calories.Management of sugar levels is a tough job but is not impossible if you realize that the task is essentially in your own hands. Last but not the least one should lead a stress free life style. Stress is a recognized trigger for diabetes. Practice relaxation techniques like breathing exercises, yoga etc.

You should go for quarterly check ups and annual comprehensive review with an experienced diabetologist and follow the prescriptions scrupulously

Ultimately the most important person in your diabetes management is Y O U.

I completely agree with Venkataramana. I am a diabetic for more than 20 years and feel that diabetes can not be cured, but can be definitely controlled. Blood Sugar level can increase because of many reasons. identifying them and controlling the root causes will help.

One size does not fit all. You can get general guidelines, but the actions have to be tailored to meet the need. Monitoring is most important.

Monitoring of not just sugar level but other factors like calorie intake, calorie used, sleep quality&quantity. These parameters along with the sugar level variations will help control diabetes.

In order to obtain initial conditions, got FBS, PPBS & HbA1C tests done before hand.

To facilitate required (optimum-NOT maximum) rest to pancreas I TOTALLY AVOIDED sweet intake; avoided fruits as well till getting CURED.

Substituted break fast and dinner by long-wheat kanji (porridge/mash) with a pinch of salt as required/possible and curries (hot/sour side dishes - with no sweet). Continued lunch as it is (with oil, fat, potato, tapioca & sweet restrictions). Took all the three meals stomach full.

Reduced food intake frequency by postponing &/or combining and filling the gaps with plain water. Ate or drank more if number of intakes is three (3) or less including refreshments (snacks, tea, coffee, cool drinks etc.) in a day. Reduced oil & fat intake.

Brisk, medium or at least normal walk possibly for an hour daily.

Precautions for you

Buy & use only unbroken long-wheat lest you should be cheated.

If blood sugar does not start decreasing in a month, avoid smoking & liquor if you are in the habit of having them.

Monitor blood sugar regularly - FBS & PPBS at least monthly and HbA1C quarterly.

If already on tab. or insulin inj. monitor blood sugar more frequently, preferably daily at least. Else one may slip into low blood sugar problem (hypoglycaemia?).

Neglecting any of the above eight points (four of modus operandi and four of caution) is similar to removing one of the legs of a table.

The text below is a "COPY&PASTE STUFF" from my previous replies to some others.

IF YOU HAVE ALREADY SEEN IT, KINDLY IGNORE THIS.

Diabetes is a fundamental disorder. It is comparable with low voltage in an electric circuit. In both cases all connected subsystems will under-perform and will fail in due course. It will affect SEX life also, if diab is not contained. Diab impairs the glucose (SUGAR) & oxygen supply to ALL CELLS of the patient. You cannot compensate the resultant weakness with liquor, food or medicines.

A DIABETES PATIENT (also known as A DIABETIC) need NOT starve. PROPER or APPROPRIATE food can be eaten EVEN FULL STOMACH THRICE DAILY! Try to understand diabetes & conquer it.

TAKING MEDICINES ALONE WILL NOT BRING DOWN BLOOD SUGAR ALWAYS. YOU HAVE TO CHANGE YOUR FOOD HABITS & LIFE STYLE ALSO TEMPORARILY TILL CURE.

While following the Long-wheat diet explained in the article referred below, non-vegetarians can have MEAT/FISH/EGG in moderate quantities as side-dishes/curries.

I was diabetic from 2006; but NOT diabetic from 2009. I studied Diabetes thoroughly, because it was to solve MY problem.

Do you want to see my experience and blood sugar history from 2006 to 2013? Those are reported at: appropedia.org/Diabetes_mel... If you want only MODUS OPERANDI, GO TO appropedia.org/Diabetes_mel...
