The pancreas of a normal adult contains approximately 200 units of insulin and the average daily secretion in healthy individuals ranges from 30 to 50 units.

Insulin is required to burn out glucose and convert into energy by the body tissues. If you eat more carbohydrate diet, more glucose is assimilated in the blood and more insulin is required to burn out or to store in the liver.

As you grow old, the glands in your body will produce less and less hormones and enzymes. Some persons may also get insulin resistance. (This may be due to lack of exercise, polycystic ovary syndrome in women, hypothyroidism, metabolic syndrome, smoking, consumption of alcohol, etc.

Simple lifestyle measures have been shown to be effective in preventing or delaying the onset of type 2 diabetes. To help prevent type 2 diabetes and its complications, people should:--

* achieve and maintain healthy body weight;

* be physically active – at least 30 minutes of regular, moderate-intensity activity on most days. More activity is required for weight control;

* eat a healthy diet of between three and five servings of fruit and vegetables a day and reduce sugar and saturated fats intake;

* avoid tobacco use – smoking increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

In Type 1 diabetics,the pancreas fails to produce any insulin because it's insulin producing cells get destroyed by what is called auto immune syndrome.In this condition our own body immune system fights and destroys some of body cell confusing them with foreign cells.Since no insulin is produced such a person should be taking insulin injections for life.

In the case of Type 2 diabetics,due to reasons of obesity,genetic factors or sedentary life style,the insulin produced by the pancreas is insufficient The body may also develops what is called insulin resistance.That means there is enough insulin but the body is unable to utilize it due to physiological reasons.The person has to go for tablets that help to produce more insulin,or overcome the insulin resistance and if the tablets do not work,take insulin injections..
