My son is also diabetic, and has cut out refined sugar from his diet.
Sugar is what is known as 'empty calories' and you can get better nutrition without it.
There are plenty of natural sugars in fruit and things like beans and other vegetables, even in meat.
Unfortunately none of us are doctors so we can't advise on medical stuff.
Hope this is some help.

The weight loss with T2D is to do with blood sugar and the effect it has on the body. In this instance the high blood sugar is causing problems & the body is trying to resolve it & this is causing abnormal weightloss. It's not to do with "calorie" intake.Cutting out the sugar you eat, reduces the blood sugar & therefore resolves the issue.
The picture is more complex than just added sugars tho, because every carbohydrate breaks down into "sugar".
You've possibly heard of quick release carbs & slow release carbs... this is how fast the carbs get into your blood and affect it.
Very simply....
Grains, fruits & veggies (root veggies and corn are all very high carb) all contain carbs.
Fruits & veggies contain fibre which is good at slowing down the release.
If you ate a jam sandwich, you'd spike your blood sugar very quickly.
However, if you were to pair the bread with a protein, & fat, eg tuna mayo sandwich, it would slow down the release.
Try to have a mix of carb (v small portion), protein, veggies (low carb ones - think greens) & fat with every meal.
As a starting point, Google GI or GL diets for food combinations 👍
