Hi I'm new here. I have adult onset hearing loss which started in my twenties and has progressed slowly and I also have bilateral vestibular failure which started in my early 50s and is probably inherited along with the hearing loss as my brother also has both! I turned 60 last year and the balance issues which include oscillopsia (jiggly vision) are harder to live with than the hearing loss. Any one else with balance issues alongside hearing loss?

New here :)
Hi, it seems you have more than a hearing loss, that is causing your problems, I’m not sure which route you have taken to come the conclusions, or what treatments you are on, if any, but I would certainly seek further Medical Opinions, starting at you local GP’s, and a through sight test, the balance problems may be helped by drugs, but you must certainly follow this through, and I would suspect that you are very sensitive to loud noises and light, but surly seek medical opinions
Thanks for your reply😃.I saw an audio vestibular consultant 2 or 3 years ago after seeing a neurologist previously. They confirmed that it is not a problem in my brain but in my ears. Medication does not help - in fact makes it worse! I do get "visual vertigo" in busy environments. The jiggly vision happens because my ears no longer send messages to my brain to say my head is moving. (No Vestibular ocular reflex). Just wondered if anyone else had the same 😬
Do you wear sunglasses, like the wraparound type, or test yourself going out in the dark, and I have to ask, your hearing, how is that.
Hi again, my soul you do have a problem, but you don't need me to say so... many of these problems in my view can be hormonal changes which can effect the balance of the fluid in the inner ears, it's ok for me to say this but I'm no doctor, and I don't know if you have had this checked out, there is a high possibility you have, sometime there is a trigger for these problems, and you may be worse at different times, so it may be wise to keep a diary on everything you do or eat to narrow down the trigger effect, but it seems quite stressful for you, I really wish you luck
Thank you GRboyRiches. I've got used to it! The balance/jiggly vision thing is similar to being deaf and isn't reversible. Not life threatening though ! 😄👍
Hello,
I have eye, hearing and balance problems.
Lost hearing in right side completely and slowly loosing in left and wearing bicross hearing aids.ENT put loss down to small blood clots to ear nerve, Nuerology say Meniere’s because I had a bout of rotational vertigo. But there are others who have problems with there hearing in my family. Angle closure in both eyes, for which they have lasered small holes in to keep pressure down. I do take Behestine which helps with balance. I like it dark at home and this soothing on my eyes, but outside particularly at dusk, it’s hard to see properly and I too loose my balance. I have found it hard to find out exactly what’s going on, so treating my symptoms has helped, although frustratingly DVLA withdrew my licence due to balance issues. I hope you find a solution that helps 🙂
Hi Purple- umm seems that different doctors can't agree the exact cause of your problems! Glad that treating the symptoms has helped a little. Sounds as if DVLA took notice of the rotational vertigo or was it your eye sight? I had rotational vertigo to start with but not now - perhaps you will get your licence back if you don't have this any more?
