I am scheduled for the DBS operation in Dallas on 4/24/2013. My neurosurgeon says I will be awake but will have a local anesthetic. Can anyone who has undergone the procedure let me know how traumatic it might be. I am 67 years old and a bit nervous about the prospect of the drilling into my skull. Thanks.

Is the DBS operation painful?
I had mine done in 2006 and there was absolutely no pain! They give you plenty of anesthetic to numb the top of your head! You just feel the vibration from the drilling! Like getting a tooth drilled! The drilling is over quickly! No worries! It's all worth it! Just keep telling yourself how much better quality of life you will have. Once they get into the brain there is no pain!

I had DBS in 2010. I am a self-evaluated "pain wimp". The experience was virtually pain free. I'd do it again in a heartbeat! It gave me my life back. Good luck to you.
Good health to you and the rest of us.
To all:
Thank you for your comments. It really helps to have this kind of feedback. My tremors have gravitated to my jaw and face so I really hope this procedure works.
