Jill has a very good answer. Relax is best advice. I'm 82 and I wake up at least once and sometimes twice a night for Toilet stops. I usually have no problems falling asleep but when I do I just lay in bed until I do fall asleep. it works most of the time. gettome

Hi Greg,I have been taking 20mg of Temazepam for over 25 years & just recently changed to Zopiclone 7.5mg as i found they worked better,if you are not a sleep in 30 minutes i find they wear off quick & end up having another! I found a drug that works much better than both the sleeping pills & knocks you out for the count for at least 8-10 hours, its called Quetipine 25mg but i cut it in half & it works a treat - i even dream in colour!! Take care.

A natural sleep aide is 5-HTP. I usually sleep 6-8 hours straight. You can't take it with certain medications, so you better check with your pharmacist first. Sweet dreams.

I have tried everything. I am very active. But as par for the course I do not go to bed till 4 or 5 or 6am, then up by 8 to 10am. then a nap from 11 to 1 or 1:30. Then it is time to get ready for work. This SUCKS. And I know it is not healthy. On Monday the 5th I go to KU Med for a eval for DBS. Anyway if anyone has anything out there that works it would be great to hear and try.

I wake about 3times in the night i always get up at 6am.I find listening to my radio all night helps as I drift in and out of sleep But by 2pm I just need a cat nap Its a vicious circle

This seems to be one of the most common things we Parkies experience and I asked the same question some time ago. I am trying half Sinemet CR at the moment. I usually sleep for a couple of hours and then wide awake. This is when I take the Sinemet. If you look back at my questions you might find something that will help you. Good luck. We need our sleep.

For me I take my Sinimet as late in the evening as possible and a glass of Red wine. I also find if you can and stay active as much as possible during the day . I volunteer down at at locale animal shelter doing what I can it helps them and I also benefit because at night I get tired, So if your not working maybe find some place where you can volunteer the stimulation from the day will help you sleep at night.

I used to be challenged with my sleep habits. Now I listen to my body and do not fight it. I am grateful that I am retired, because I only sleep for 5 hours on average. I enjoy staying up and getting up early. I figure why fight it. I do smoke pot to relax and to get relief from the pain. If you still insist on sleeping more may I suggest pot. Or a banana. Oatmeal helps. Need more help, go to health store and talk to them. They will probable suggest Melatonin or something like that. Also talk to pharmacist about your schedule taking your meds.

hi greg! I try to get in bed same time every night. I take klonopin (prescription) plus valerian and melatonin washed down with sleepy time tea. Rub trauma oil or aspercreme on any sore places. Play soothing music on radio and turn it off when not soothing. Read something absorbing until sleepy. 5 nights out of 7 I will sleep a good 7 hours. Keep lights low and no electronics in bedroom (OK I bring my blackberry, but who's perfect)

I sleep about 3 hours a night, up until about 6 months ago I slept a good 7-8 hours a night. At that time I took 15 mg ambien and 2 aleve per night slept like a baby. The aleve caused intestinal bleeding which caused a pretty severe anemia, hemeglobin went to 6, so stopped aleve and stopped sleeping. Pain got pretty bad, now on 15 mg slow release morphine (geez) helps a bit sleeping a little more, added a muscle relaxant, a bit more sleep. I stay pretty active during the day, making cabinets and other wood working, can ignore pain and cramping if I stay active, but in the evenings it gets bad. I really miss sleep, I frequently get up by 6 am and go downstairs to my shop, wouldn't be too bad if I went to sleep before 3 am. I keep trying new things the dr's recommend, am ready to go back to aleve, but the passing out from anemia would be bad in the shop. Don't know what to do...........

Hello olpilot,

I am sorry to read of your lack of sleep. As one who has gone years without proper sleep,i know only too well it is like being tortured. I am not on this medication now, but took it for many months at one time; it is called Amitriptyline. Originally, it was developed as an anti- depressant in doses of 75mg and above, but at doses of 10, 20 or 30mg, it has the side effect of being a sedative. It also reduces pain that wakes you up during the night. Years ago, before Levadopa and the like,it and other medications with anticholinergic affects were used to treat Parkinson's. It suppresses the neurotransmitter Acetylcholine which is thought to be out of balance with dopamine.

If you consider this medication, please know that it has side effects such as constipation, dry mouth and mild cognitive impairment.

Before I started taking it, I researched it on the Internet and found that one person had been taking it over 25 years.

Regards

Norton
