Caffeine and Nicotine

The Parkinsons Disease Foundation just posted new research results on August 13th in which they gathered information about risk factors for developing Parkinsons .

The study states that people who have a history of smoking have a 50% LESS chance of developing Parkinsons. Coffee drinkers have 40% LESS chance of developing Parkinsons.

I recently attended a Parkinsons symposium where researchers were talking about the possibility of using nicotine in the treatment of Parkinsons.

It is interesting researchers and scientists are dancing around a theme of caffeine and nicotine for the possible treatment and prevention of Parkinsons Both stimulate the central nervous system...hmmmmmmmm

dx'd 1999. Was advised at the time to carry on smoking. This message still good today. Every neuro I have seen says the same thing.

Regardless i have attempted to stop using every form of aid on the market with the same result - felt really ill with each process and regardless of determination to give up have had to admit defeat and therefore still smoke. Tried cold turkey - no chance. Made my Parkinson's worse each time.

I have been told that spliffs are good but as yet have not experimented as it is against the law. After 11 years of medication I feel that it starting to do me more harm than good so will be seeing my consultant soon to discuss alternatives.

I will keep you posted

Jamaican slang, mon, for a joint -- usually a very large joint, sort of cone shaped, using brown wrapping paper -- ah, takes me back to my youth!

I imagine many Doctors and health professionals reading this and having a fit.

If it were proved, it could open up a whole can of worms regarding smoking in public places.

I smoked for thirty years and drank coffee.

Is there a link to the research results do you know?

My Parkinsons was caused by Prozac Which I only took for ten days, after which it made me seriously ill from a reaction from which I never recovered. For ten years the Doctors said it was all in the mind. Now unfortunately after becoming seriously ill they had to take me serious.

Imagine turning to fags, strong coffee you could stand a spoon in and spliffs.

By next week I feel sure I will be doing cart wheels. Yipppeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

What a great alternative, to sticking neupro patches on.

Sometimes I feel like a Royal Mail Parcel.

Caffeine and nicotine? sure, die early of something painful so you don't have to suffer the end effects of Parkinson's... as an alternative treat it with something that tastes good and is good for you.

I always say "everything tastes better with jalapeños (or chocolate)". What I really mean is that both are effective in reducing my Parkinson's symptoms.

For example, capsaicin (the active ingredient of jalapeño and other spicy chiles) releases dopamine in the brain, so it is used for treatment of bradykinesia, over-active bladder, diskinesia, and other symptoms, including pain. Google "capsaicin treatment for parkinson's disease"

For example, The Beta-phenyl-ethylamine in chocolate is a psychoactive substance that passes the blood brain barrier to release dopamine. Google "chocolate and parkinson's disease" for more benefits.

I don't think we should all take up smoking! The researchers at the seminar said they were trying to develop a better way to deliver correct doses of nicotine without the harmful side effects. Don't shoot the messenger-just sharing info..

Chocolate therapy? I think that is something we could all get behind!!!

I would not try and persuade anyone to smoke, the bad side is well documented. Just saying what applies to me.

I did everything I could to quit smoking as my family has a history of cancer. After finally winning the battle I started having PD symptoms. As I understand it nicotine releases dopamine to the brain, therefore there has got to be some benefit from smoking. There is a smokeless cigarette on the market that is not supposed to be harmful, I have thought about trying it as I still miss relaxing with a smoke but hate to get hooked on nicotine again..

Is that your Westie? I have two, they are my precious babies!!

I'm 62, have smoked since I was 7, and had a Brasilian wife. Why have I got PD if this study is accurate?

legal in my state. I choose edibles or medibles which are effective with the provisos of 1 learning which and how much if you do not wish to be stoned. It takes some personal research and usually invites a wink or some mouth sounds when you wish to have an informative discussion. Ahuh or hmmm or tchtchtch

I still haven't found this subject addressed. What about decaffeinated coffee? I recently read that's one of the substances they used to decaffeinated coffee is, TPC???it is known that this toxsin causes Parkinson's. Does any body know anything about this?

Kat00 profile image

It is the caffeine in coffee that is supposed to help PD...decaf doesn't have any benefits. I have read lots of things about the nasty stuff they use to decaffeinate coffee as well.

I LOVE my first jolt of "high octane" Java in the morning. I know lots of people can't handle caffeine -but to me, I don't see the purpose in drinking decaf...its like buying a teddy bear without the soft, fluffy stuffing, or a shiny new car with no engine LOL
