Q: What is DaTscan?

Dr. Beck: DaTscan is an imaging technology that uses small amounts of a radioactive drug to help determine how much dopamine is available in a person's brain. A machine similar to but smaller than an MRI machine, called a single photon emission computed tomography or SPECT scanner, measures the amount and location of the drug in the brain.

Hope this helps.

I was diagnosed after having a DaTScan....the radioactive drugs are injected into your arm....you feel a mild tingling sensation......then you have to wait about 3 hours for the drugs to reach your brain....in this period you can not go near children or pregnant ladies.....The scan takes about 45 minutes and is not as claustrophobic as an MRI scan....The results of such a scan are usually 98% accurate
