My husband was diagnosed with Young Onset Parkinson's at the age of 35. We desperately searched for a support group that would work for us but the only ones in our area met during the day and were geared for the older, retired crowd. We are young, Chris works full time and we are raising 3 small children.
So we created our own group!! Trying to get the word out about it, so if you are on Facebook, please stop by and "Like" our page so that we can start networking.
Here are a couple of persons that may know: Lisa Van Rossum, Parkinson Assoc. of the Carolinas, 866-903-7275, lvanrossum@parkinsonassociation.org .She may put your request in her newletter. Also, Gretchen Huff ghuff@5sqc.com, coordinates the lowcountry group, but travels around the state in her job. Also, check out James Mangini's 1000 mile marathon on facebook-he is part of Team Fox, Michael J.Fox foundation, and he may be able to help locate others, Good Luck!
Thank you, Nancy, for the references. We are already networked with James Mangini but I'll definitely get in touch with the others you mentioned. I appreciate your help!
I trust that you are plugged in to the Young Onset Center in the Central DuPage Hospital, Winfield, IL. Also, the National Office of the APDA would probably be happy to work with you to gather other YO's in your area. (1-800-223-2732)
Yes, we are currently teamed up with the APDA's Optimism Campaign. They are assisting us in hosting a Paintball 4 Parkinson's fundraiser this May. But we won't be affiliated with anyone beyond that until we can decide as a group which national association best suits our needs.
It is really nice to discover that we aren't as alone as we thought we were!
