Ashwagandha for Parkinson's Symptoms?

Just been a few days and I found amazing relief with this herb. I am absolutely blown away with the results. I am posting this early so that informed forum members can decide if they want to join me on this journey for 3 months and see if the benefits are consistent. Research and blog post links below.

Talk to your doctor about this and if other treatments are not as effective, consider this option. Available on Amazon. However I strongly recommend that you have your pharmacist cross verify the possible interactions of Ashwagandha with other medications such as SSRI 's etc.

EDIT : Link to the products used :

I tried two of them. The first one below from Futurebiotic suggests two capsules per day at 3000mg total. The results were impressive but not as immediate as the second one from Smshealthproducts that I started using three days ago.

a.co/d/4iXwFmm (Futurebiotic) - Two recommended by the manufacturer. Benefits observed but not as powerful as the other one below.

👍a.co/d/au4yTOM (Smshealthproducts). One capsule per day is recommended by the manufacturer. But it doesn't seem like it works. I started using two and noticed immediate response. Recommend at 2 capsules per day instead of the one capsule per day recommended.

Glad that it is working for you. I tried it for several weeks as I recall. Did not do anything for me but did not do any harm either.

Interesting read. But what does your education have to do with it?🤔🤔😑

It is just a disclaimer. I think Ashwagandha is probably bad for PD and other autoimmune diseases, but I have no medical training or advanced degree so take my opinion with a pinch of salt :)

Hi pdpatient,

I am interested, and would be grateful for a bit more information.

You said: "... I started using two and noticed immediate response. "

Could you please tell me a bit more? What improvements exactly did you get?

Thanks!

D.

My question, too!

pdpatient profile image
pdpatient in reply toDaisies22

My dyskinesias were almost gone!! No need to take more than one or two propranolol!

Also, my motor function is getting better. Unfortunately. not much improvement in low blood pressure.

Ah, I would happily settle for improved motor function 😁And I think high blood pressure is more dangerous than low blood pressure, so I'll take that too!

That's great news! Ayurvedic medicine is very successful with Parkinson's, from what I've read. I've already read incredible reviews of Ashwaghanda at british-supplements.net (a great supplier for anyone in the UK). I would say to anyone who hasn't noticed a difference, make sure you're using a strong enough formula, and give it at least 8 weeks. I've had it in my herbal tincture from my naturopath for months now and love it. When I also supplemented it with capsules alongside that I became positively chilled and uber relaxed! It's an amazing adaptogen.

Agree with you. But the resistance to these products is very strong and intense from the conventional medical establishment 🙄😒

Well stern resistance usually means the product is effective.

What strength would you recommend? Also, have you ever experienced any unwanted symptoms?

pdpatient profile image
pdpatient in reply toDaisies22

2700 to 3000 mg per day is what works for me. You need to make sure that the formulation that you buy contains black pepper. Necessary for absorption.

Look back at the main post of this thread. I have edited the same with links to the two products I have tried from Amazon.

Reetpetitio profile image
Reetpetitio in reply toDaisies22

This kind of strength. Reading the reviews makes me think I should buy them again myself! I don't get so much in my tincture; but it definitely helps buffer me freom stress. I haven't had any unwanted symptoms at all, no.

Wow. That's a whopper of a powerful formulation. Be careful with that kind of strength.

pdpatient in reply toReetpetitio

Jeanie got it spot on. Consider whether you want to consume such a huge amount at the get go. Then again what do I know? I just see that it's nearly 3 times the amount that I am experimenting with that worked and therfore made the comment.

Fortunately the side effects are not life threatening. Diarrhea is one expected effect, but I for one would welcome it. 😂

Reetpetitio profile image
Reetpetitio in reply topdpatient

That's interesting about diarrhea! I didn't know that - if I buy it again, I'll certainly look out for that.

How much per day?

Reetpetitio profile image
Reetpetitio in reply toJeanieBeanie

From memory, the packet says 2 a day, but I was only taking one (but also take some in a general tincture)

JeanieBeanie profile image
JeanieBeanie in reply toReetpetitio

What strength would you recommend? I have read 600 mg per day in two doses but the one I bought is attached. Is this too strong. I don't have PD. I am carer for my HWPD.

Hi Jeanie, I'm sorry I can't advise you about dosing; I'm not a naturopath.

I try to buy directly from the British Supplements website as I trust their quality; their popularity does mean that there are a lot of competitors with lower standards trying to use the BS ethos of no fillers or binders etc in their marketing.

Perhaps you could start on one cap at breakfast and see how it goes? From google it sounds like upset stomach / loose bowels and possible liver issues would be a sign of 'too much', but, large doses have been used in trials.

I have studied Ayurvedic medicine a little. I really like systems of medicine that have been passed down through more through the generations. If something has persisted for more than a thousand years, my experience is it is worth looking at.

Depock Chopra promotes a very expensive type of Ayurveda.

Ayurveda as a system is better as a preventative

Ashwaghanda Has caught on big in the West for anxiety. It is even sold at Walmart. It seems to be very effective for anxiety but is recommended as a part of any Neurologic disease. One web site from India recommended 8 grams of it for Parkinson’s, but without a personal Ayurvedic doctor recommending it, I would not take that much.

These doctors are not everywhere and I do not believe I have one in this state although I have looked extensively.

I take Brahma and Gotu kola, and Ashwaghanda, Cinnamon, triphilia and a few others from Banyan botanicals. They have a lot of education there about this form of medicine which is from India and somewhat related to Chinese medicine.

It seems to me these two systems highly influenced each other, or perhaps had a common origin. Chinese medicine has ti chi. Ayurveda has yoga. Some herbs like Bala grow in both places and are used in both systems.

I have often wondered why no one on the forum takes Triphilia which is taken in India as the number 1 herb even by those without constipation just for general health. It is taken at twice normal dose for occasional constipation. Banyan puts the 3 fruits of Triphilia in every single herbal formulation they make, such as kidney formulation, heart, joints etc. This is how much of a mainstay this herb is to the system of medicine. It is great for bowels but from Ayurvedic point of view would also help Parkinson’s

Part of this system of medicine is that you need to taste the herbs for maximal effectiveness . Plus bulk herbs are cheaper than capsules. I can not use triphilia as a bulk herb because it contains profoundly bitter and sour herbs. But the pills at Banyan do provide a slight taste. It is not a capsule.

Mucuna Pruriens Also from this system of medicine

I use this system of medicine, but I would not expect too much. I think it is powerful but really not ideal for end stage disease. That said, I use everything I think should help that seem safe and reasonably priced, even if the results are not dramatic.

Also early onset Parkinson’s might benefit more. Since acupuncture and Ayurveda work on the subtle energies, the younger you are the better they work. The body responds to subtle things very well in youth. Even in Western medicine, longevity medicine, doctors will say “it even works in the elderly and that is unusual”.

Just for reference since Banyan does not discuss specific diseases, Parkinson’s is apparently a Vata Kapha problem. Vata is normally considered with neurologic issues.

pdpatient profile image
pdpatient in reply toAstrojupiter

Thanks for your insight. I know about Banyan and I have been impressed by their raw ground version of Mucuna Pruriens. I found great results with that also. I will check out their version of Ashwagandha.

Unfortunately, as I mentioned earlier in one of my comments, there is fierce resistance to the idea of taking supplements, no matter their provenance. You should have seen the horror in the faces of my doctors when I mentioned that I was taking Mucuna Pruriens, way back when. The concept of synergistic treatment with western and eastern medicine and other supplements is scary for them. So, their attitude influences my caregivers.

So, there are exceptions, such as Ashwagandha which has gained immense popularity. I was able to convince my family to let me try this one.

But I am cognizant of the fact that there is going to be considerable variation in the potency of the same product from different manufacturers. Which probably explains the difference in my responses to the two that I tried.

Thank you again for reminding me about Banyan.

It is interesting that your dyskinesia and motor symptoms are better. I would think an immediate improvement in psychological symptoms would be more likely. You have inspired me to try it regularly on my mother.

Antioxidants such as ashwagandha and melatonin can both improve sleep and reduce oxidative stress, both of which can be beneficial for PD symptoms.

So it is possible that there is an interaction where improved sleep can help reduce symptoms and vice versa. As with melatonin, I suspect that ashwaganda as a sleep medication is mainly responsible for the improvement. From experience, every half-hour of extra sleep does wonders!

Please be careful. Research side effects. It may not be healthy long term. It is a popular herb but that doesn’t ensure safety. Just go into it with open eyes.
