Isn't it time for Constipation, like Mr Dangerfield to get some respect?

In order for this post to survive I, We cannot offend anyone. So please no slang terms/words. Scientific words, terms and phrases are always acceptable.

If our gut is that closely aligned with certain parts of the brain, we need to start showing some respect before someone gets --it Faced!!

In all my life I never once had constipation. My weekly constitution consisted of 3 or at the most 4 bowel movements per week. Bonus points for the first person to enlighten me as to the origin of constitution.

For several years I've suffered from chronic CONSTIPATION. The last 3 plus years it has been unrelenting. Most of us have heard of term "brick sh.. house". Does anyone know the origin? I'm certain it started with a PD sufferer. A good diarrhea is appreciated by many. Drs tell us to increase our fluids and eat fibrous foods. Our meds are also to blame. None of us will cut back on our meds, took to long to find the right dose. Dulcolax works but I heard some horror stories. A PWP in my support group took a sleeping pill and Dulcolax the same night. Not a good ending.

Been thinking. Can PD be caused by constipation?

Be safe, take care and God bless. Happy Holidays!!

I can relate. I have found that an herb called Cascara sagrada works wonders. You can find it on Amazon

what meds are you on? When hubby was on too much levodopa he was terribly constipated. He reduced the levodopa and constipation soon went away. Sleeping tablets and antidepressants can do it too.

I bought an Everfit vibration platform from Amazon for exercise to reverse osteoporosis and am delighted to report that it is remarkably effective at overcoming constipation. 15 mins twice a day - brilliant!

So...are you standing on the platform while having a BM???

Hi 2bats, there are many vibration platform on AMZ. When did you get yours? My balance is down the toilet too. I'll look for one with handle bars. Thank you.

I did some research on the Everfit brand and it is of quite poor quality. I think I prefer checking out the mini rebounder.

My husband takes 1-2t of Natural Vitality Magnesium supplement each day, with 1T of plain physillium husk -both found online, Amazon. Plus he drinks a lot of water. He doesn’t like flax seed, but 1-2 T of flaxseed on oatmeal, yogurt, etc works well too - Ali g with this magnesium. Our Dr recommebddd the magnesium drink.

She suggested putting about 1/3 c of near boiling water in a coffee cup (I just microwave water in the cup for 30 seconds), add the magnesium powder, let it fuzz up + add ice cubes and sone more water. Walking just 20 min a day would help, but he resists that

blueberry smoothie every day 🙏🏼

Mp,

I am interested in how many blueberries you use for each smoothie and how many smoothies per day? What benefits do you attribute to this smoothie? Thank You!

I use 1 cup of organic frozen blueberries to about 6 oz orange juice and a small banana. I drink 1 smoothie every morning and attribute daily “regularity” to this and tea my traditional Chinese medicine practitioner prescribes 🙏🏼

So you take the smoothie on an empty stomach or do you eat other food around that same time?

Do you attribute any other benefits to them in terms of PD symptoms?

I have had my cocoa and mushroom ☕️ Before my smoothie. Then I actually drink my smoothie in the bathtub so I don’t get cold! I enjoy the smoothie! It’s healthy food and I know it helps with regularity. Also it’s easy! I use a green powder for an afternoon smoothie just to up my nutrition generally. Just not every day like the blueberry one 🙏🏼💟☮️

For years I tried OTC laxatives then tried prescription drugs. Right now I'm on Motegrity. So far it seems to not cause diarrhea. But it's hard to tell when it's time for a BM. I get congested sinuses which tells me to try for a BM. It still takes a lot of muscular effort to force out a BM but at least its not diarrhea.

The connection between the colon and sinuses is well known in TCM: Traditional Chinese Medicine. The large intestine meridian travels from the thumb to the nose. The bladder meridian travels from the heel bone to the hip bone. Both of these are integral to BM production.

I've been on Motegrity for one week. The first few days the doc said to take half a pill once daily. Now I'm up to a whole pill once daily. Before Motegrity I was on Linzess. It seemed to be hit-or-miss in that some mornings allowed a normal BM but some mornings there was a lot of diarrhea also.

KP there's so much evidence implicating the gut in all of this. So many PWP have this constipation problem. Did we over study and miss something? Stay strong.

Diarrhea with constipation? I've read about PWP where chronic constipation led to an impacted colon. How many of us in our early years wouldn't touch a med prescribed by any Doc until we cleared it with our Neuro? I still do with meds and OTC supplements.

I would try Mannitol - it's an osmotic diuretic which I believe increases Butyrate. Some people believe it also has beneficial effects for PD (including me, though I have never been diagnosed, but have had some interesting symptoms, and believe a combination of Mannitol and 20 mg Melatonin at night keep most of the symptoms away).

Isthistheone profile image
Isthistheone in reply toalexask

Hi Alex, I took Manitol for almost a year. I believed the story line behind it: An Italian research group had some house flies whose DNA was chemically altered. Maybe the group was under funded and they couldn't afford mice. Maybe PETA claimed it was cruelty to animals. Sorry to go off topic! Anyway one of the group, presumably on a Monday morning noticed some of the flies were able to walk faster than the others. He wondered what was going on. He noticed the list on a Manitol mixture was off. A very observant researcher. Throughout history many ideas, inventions and cures have been pfound by accident! That's not a bad thing. The point I'm trying to make yes stay focused and note it all. Is the jury still out on Manitol?

Isthistheone profile image
Isthistheone in reply toalexask

BTW. I'm not a Dr, but 20 mg Melatonin seems very high, or did you mean 5 mg?

alexask profile image
alexask in reply toIsthistheone

20 mg works for me. Others take even more.

"...Been thinking. Can PD be caused by constipation?" I think it goes the other way. PD is caused by nerve dysfunction and affects the colon as a downstream effect.

Magnesium seems to really help. Wherever I start taking it after a break it seems to have a very cleansing effect, mostly very positive except for the need to poop in the middle of the night which is annoying when half asleep and desperate to get back to bed!
