"Foreseeably, a patient would come to the hospital presenting with Parkinson's disease and they would just need this sort of one intervention to potentially alleviate many of their symptoms for years to come,"

Why in hell doesn't anyone know about this? I'm in Australia and would love to try it. Where in blazes can I go to try it?

"Nisbet hopes clinical trials will start in the next five years, after the gel has proven safe for human use."

Scientists want to keep you safe. Not only is it not a therapy but a delivery mechanism for stem cell transplants, but it does so by augmenting GDNF. Previous stem cell transplantation resulted in complications like brain tumours and diskinesias. And as Gymbag is keen to point out, we're not mice. GDNF is effectively blocked to a significant degree in pwp by alpha synuclein misfolding and over abundance. This problem doesn't exist in mice whose brains have been damaged by chemical toxins to be like PD.

At Bristol (where the main GDNF trial was carried out) they were looking at a combined therapy with a micro - rna known as mir-7 to overcome this problem, but I don't believe there are any human trial results.

So, it might not work, and if it does work it is not going to cure us but instead help stem cells to cure us. And there's a bit of work to do before stem cell grafts are safe and effective

I always wonder why they don't use the mice that have the PD like symptoms after receiving an FMT from humans with PD? Seems like a more realistic mouse model of PD to me?

The Bristol team planned to use hsnca-ovexp mice developed in Oxford to also over express a-syn in the cell for testing their gdnf-7 product. But you have to wait for the mice to grow old...

The problem with FMT mice is they don't exhibit the neuronal destruction in the SN found in pwp

Is it because they have not had the FMT long enough to do such damage? It takes years for PwP to show significant damage.

I think there are 2 main strands to PD. The stuff due to dead neurons (mostly motor symptoms) and the other stuff. The other stuff directly causes some symptoms AND is responsible for killing neurons. FMT mice suffer the other stuff but not long enough to do the neuron nuking enough.Mice ain't people. Simples 😉

Nice job finding and sharing Roy. They hope to have this game changing medication in trials within five years. I realize these trials take time. IS THERE A FAST TRACK OPTION AVAILABLE!! Such a slap in the face to PWP to hear 5 years before trials plus 5 years to review puts this out to 2031 at the earliest!! PWP stay in the game, there are so many good ideas in the pipeline. Take care, stay safe and keep moving. God bless.

My son commented:

“Interesting. Injecting your brain with Gel. Sounds like there could be many side effects.”

Always a downside to new treatments. Is the reward worth the risk? The senior class knows where they will be in 10 years.

It's not a medication but a mechanism for transplanting stem cells. There have been at least three posts about it before this

Hi Winnie hope you are feeling well. I'm a casual observer in this Amazing Race. I don't think it matters that this is not a medication but a stem cell transplantation procedure. I typically don't research the number of times something has been presented. I will say if they used grape jelly they woulda had more followers.Winnie in your Bio you mention a strong pull towards Parkinson's disease originating in the gut. The evidence keeps building that this is exactly what's happening.

Last year i came across an article about worms and specifically the microbiome (beat me if that's wrong) bacillus substilis. There are just too many positive remarks to ignore. I take one capsule daily with a light meal, mostly at BF. Small price to pay if it doesn't work. And if it cuts alpha synuclein levels and prevents aggregation! My risk management assessment - worth the risk.

Thanks for the reminder. I remember the worms. The whole a-syn thing is complicated. I was on a trial for a monoclonal antibody too. There is however a world of difference between a simple gel to cure parkinson's and the whole field of stem cell research, and it looked like a few people had the wrong end of the stick

Hi Winnie. DRs can't keep up with all the latest, so i don't feel so bad. I only go all in if i understand the medication and and the mechanism. I partly understand the relationship of the gut and PD. I feel strongly that the mystery will be unlocked soon. Hope we are both around to benefit. Take care.

Yea ROY this treatment needs some more work. I am not advocating for it. The point I'm trying to make - it's much later for many of us. I may go down in the book of casualties, but that GD Parkinson is gonna feel it from me. Always said if I can't be cured I wanna make it easier for person taking my place. Hang in there PWP our sweet day is coming soon!!!

This is exciting. We’re talking of a cure here. Ten years is too long though- they need to hurry it up.

"The gel has been tested so far only on animals and has been effective in combating movement disorders of Parkinson's disease in rats. "

Well there is lie number one, Rats dont get Parkinsons.

look for lie number two

Funding, funding , funding and some body will give it to them

The gel is a delivery mechanism. The treatment is stem cells.

"Through use of the hydrogel technique we demonstrated increased survival of the grafted dopamine neurons and restored movement in an animal model of Parkinson's disease."
