Food and sinemet timings

Having read in the “Parkinsons book” recommended by Roy Prosner we have been avoiding food two hours before taking sinemet and then eating an hour after.

It is getting g a little difficult to plan meals around this schedule.

How important is it, or should we just avoid protein during these times please?

You may be fine just avoiding protein during these times. Try it and see...

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I suppose that is the only way. Do you stick to no protein?

in reply to Jo692

I avoid protein until 1 hour after my last dose of the day. Then I eat all the protein I want.

See my profile.

Cut times to half hour and one hour. Doses at least four hours apart.

Dose taken at exact same time every time. This reduce dyskinesia happening.

Be more relaxed regarding protein

Different kinds of protein may have different effects. Meat doesn’t affect me much, lentils and yogurt have a greater effect.

Medications. A Treatment Guide to Parkinson’s Disease

In 1988, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommended that the daily dose of Sinemet should not exceed 800 mg per day, and as of 2013, this recommendation has not been revised. In 2018 the labeling of Sinemet recommends not exceeding a levodopa total daily dose of 2,000 mg per day. As movement disorder specialists, general neurologists and primary care doctors have learned, many people with Parkinson’s can easily tolerate the higher doses used to minimize symptoms. Some people

with PD encounter problems with insurance reimbursement of higher daily doses because of the FDA regulation. An insurance decision can be appealed if necessary.

Yes. It makes me nauseous as well. I always eat a little something with it.
