Parkinsons, DBS, Covid19 Pfizer Vaccine

My wife had DBS 10/2020. Everything isn't back to normal but they are much much much better than before DBS. All tremors and difficult times were gone. She received her 1st Pfizer Covid vaccine shot 3/29/2021. On 4/6/2021 she started to have breakthrough tremors and can barely walk without help. The doctor said he has some patients who have gotten the vaccine that has caused transient worsening of their Parkinson's symptoms. I'm hoping these are temporary as the doctor suggest. Renewed tremors really has shaken my wife quite a bit. Just a heads up in case you experience this and a question. Has anyone else had temporary worsening symptoms after their Pfizer Covid19 vaccine? UPDATE1: today 4/8/2021 -- still struggling. This is a pretty severe reaction IMHO. I've been reading some about vaccine and dehydration so we're now drinking lots of water. UPDATE2: a really good point was brought up.... why after 7 days... ANYONE else have delayed symptoms (4-8 days)? OR could it be something else with her DBS system?

Hi ! I had the opposite experience with the Pfizer vaccine. I got the first jab on 4/3. On 4/4 I felt a bit under the weather, but noticed all my PD symptoms had been SIGNIFICANTLY diminished.. They mildly returned on 4/5, then again diminished 4/6. Now there creeping back. Curious to see what happens after the 2nd jab.

2nd jab 4/24, had a horrible night, 4/25 felt like I had the flu, slight fever, needed help getting out of bed, could hardly walk, NO tremors, 4/26 feeling better, able to move my body more, slept a lot, no tremors, 4/27 no fever, resting a lot, but started doing a little house work. There is a large pink circle on the jab arm just under the jab. Slight tremor return...I wonder what the shot has in common with the 2 day tremor holiday ?

YES. My father has had DBS since 2013. Tremor is not returning but his freezing has gotten so much worse and just complete fatigue and feeling unwell. He has been FULLY vaccinated for a month. I hope it is transient - but it seems to be sticking around...

Please update this thread if you see improvement. I will also keep this thread updated. We're considering skipping the 2nd shot until we see improvement or get more info.

I will absolutely. Although it is tempting to skip - contracting covid would mean a death sentence for my father. It's a lose lose situation.

Hello i had my 1st moderna vaccine and had a lot more tremors and i felt as though my meds didnt work as well but after a couple weeks i seemed to be back to normal i did NOT get the second one because i feared the same results (my choice)

park_bear profile image
park_bear in reply toRS313

The first injection provides some immunity:

nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/N...

" the antibody titers of the vaccinees without preexisting immunity increased by a factor of 3 after the second vaccine dose"

The factor of 3 after the second shot seems like a lot but the chart at the link shows that the antibody response varies by a factor of over 100 among patients. If you had a strong immune response after the first shot you may be adequately covered.

I have heard that some people feel unwell for a few days and that is expected but i am curious that it took 8 days for an noticeable effect? Have others found side effects take a week to show?

royal57 profile image
royal57 in reply toHikoi

When I got my Pfizer shots the 1st was cake, the 2nd was just a blah day/night the day after the 2nd shot then all was ok. Yes this one took several days, that's why I'm researching. The PD doctor said he had several patients who had transient worsening PD symptoms. I didn't ask timeline... maybe I should.

Well I hope things come right for your wife ( I face my vaccination in the next month). I just wonder if there is some other cause or factor given the long time frame.

royal57 profile image
royal57 in reply toHikoi

That's a very good point and I'll start to research that tomorrow. Why after 6-7 days ( she felt funky a day or two before major problems)

As they say correlation doesn’t automatically mean causation.

I had my 2nd shot from Pfizer last week and I didn't have any side effects with either one. I was lucky for sure!

My husband, with PD, had the Astra Zeneca injection and apart from his arm aching no other symptoms. I don’t have PD, but had flu symptoms for a couple of days. I ve had my second one a few weeks ago and no symptoms at all. My husbands is on Saturday and he’s not expecting symptoms with his second one.

I took the first Moderna injection a week ago. No Symptoms. The next on May 1st.

I have not had DBS. I had both Pfizer shots and had zero side effects.

Jmwg45 profile image

No DBS and non tremor PD (bradykenesia, rigidity, dystonia).

Had Astra Zeneca jab, initially only sore arm. About 1 week afterwards lost all 'sleep benefit' with struggle to move in morning. Hit or miss on how much ontime L/C would give me or how good that ontime would be. Slowly improved from 4 weeks following jab and 5 weeks after back where I was.

From what I understand this could fit the timescale for when your body is creating the immunity but it could just be coincidence.

I will definitely get the second dose though because Covid would presumably create the same immune response plus you'd be ill with Covid.

I had my first Pfizer shot April 2 and did not experience any worsening of PD or any other side effects; my 2nd shot is April 24th.

My husband hasn’t had DBS but he could barely walk for 2 days after his second Pfizer shot this week. I’m pretty sure that’s the cause, but it’s always hard to tell with PD as you know! He’s much better today, day 3 and he had no worsening after the first dose. Good luck.!

After my hwp had his first Pfizer shot, he had an increase of freezing - prior to this he had a UTI which created worse freezing. Unfortunately two nights ago he fell during the night going to the bathroom and his walking is limited to short steps and freezing. Prior to all this he was doing well as he is engaged in a 14 weeks of PoNS exercise program. I'm hoping things will settle as he feels better.

LeharLover62 profile image
LeharLover62 in reply toSpencer53

Where did he find the PoNS training? My husband’s freezing can be pretty bad. He had sepsis from his UTI last fall, and it took 6 weeks to get back to baseline from that, but the freezing persists.

I hope he is able to get back to his prior best self soon!

Spencer53 profile image

I live in Ontario, Canada. If you google PoNS, there are clinics around the states but amazingly I found a clinic 10 minutes from us. The PoNS has only been approved in Canada since last year. At the start - two weeks in clinic for five days and then I support my husband the remaining time which is six days a week and have a once a week visit to the clinic. Any mishaps like a UTI, falling, Pfizer shot created the most freezing but now as he's feeling better it's getting better. The Brain's Way of Healing by Dr. Norman Doidge was the first I became aware of the PoNS. There's another called Red Light Therapy - people are making or buying their own "Coronet" and it's showing benefits for the brain as well. The same clinic has a headband version and we'll consider it down the road. I was so pleased yesterday to see his walking gait come out naturally while on the treadmill - with six more weeks to go I feel it will be positive. Regarding the book, you can search YouTube - for David Suzuki - Dr. Norman Doidge - The Brain's Way of Healing - it gives a 45 minute overview of the book with some amazing stories of brain improvement - also included John Pepper! I feel encouraged that there are wonderful opportunities for improving conditions such as Parkinson's. Good Luck.

I see you're still patrolling HU, posting anti-vax comments wherever covid is mentioned. 😆

Hi. Day five after my first Moderna vaccine my tremors were extremely bad and totally divergent to a normal day for me. I could barely walk for a couple days and my balance was off enough that I need to just sit. It gradually got better over two weeks and I don’t feel like I’m quite back to my baseline. My second shot is coming up in a week.

royal57 profile image
royal57 in reply toHealingGroove

Thank you so much for the timeline. My wife is getting to two weeks from her shot and everything hit at week 1. She still has temors and walking is difficult. We bumped up her stimulation 0.2 on her right side it was so bad. It might be getting a little better... time will tell. Next Pfizer dose set for 4/19 but she might skip it. This was not fun especially after everything was going so well.

So you're another troll and stalker? How utterly condescending and judgemental of you, to chastise those who may be on more than one forum or who may be on more forums than you? Who are you to judge and berate others because of their "chronic health issues"? You're incredibly rude.

kevowpd profile image
kevowpd in reply toLondinium

You've been all over HU spreading the same anti vax rhetoric. You post about little else. Do whatever floats your boat, but don't be surprised if someone mentions it.

kevowpd profile image

I dont care about your views and don't care about whether you express them. At all. You are the one that is distressed about casual observations regarding your apparent need to post in dozens of forums on HU.

kevowpd profile image

It's possible for me to not care about your views and also feel like mentioning that you have posted them in quite a lot of forums. I think you are being a bit dramatic.

kevowpd profile image
kevowpd

Berate you? I didnt even respond to you. The distinct impression one gets from your recent posting history is that you trawl HU looking for COVID threads. If that is wrong, then i'm sorry.

You are comfortable being rude to others. You get a little of your own medicine and it's suddenly a big problem? Ok.

@royal57, yes I too got my first dose of the Pfizer vaccination on March 18 and did have a severe worsening of my tremors after 24 hours that lasted for 3 days after. At first I did not connect it with my vaccination because of my misinformed expectation of symptoms of various reaction.

I was told to expect pain. Instead, I experienced no pain at all either in my arm or any other parts of my body. Other family members who had the Moderna vaccine experienced pain, but they don’t have Parkinson’s. After puzzling over the reasons for the mysterious exacerbation of my Parkinson’s symptoms, I asked my doctor who squarely put the blame on Parkinson’s.

I chalked up my lack of pain to my diabetes because we diabetics don’t experience pain the way normal people do. Mostly that lack of pain is a curse (think of all of the amputations and kidney issues and heart conditions), but sometimes it is a good thing when you don’t feel pain from things like vaccination.

I feel that I made a mistake on this forum by declaring that I had no problem after vaccination without giving context or an update.

I am now very concerned about what I am going to experience with the second dose that I will get on the 15th of April. I will update the forum a few days after that.

Hoping for the best and I would not worry about your wife and trust your doctor’s judgment because I am told that this is being closely monitored by the MDS community.

Thank you for the info. I'm starting to think my wife's issue may be with the DBS device. She only had a sore arm after the 1st shot but then 7 DAYS later she started tremor and difficulty walking. Seven days seems like a long time before having any problems but who knows. Her tremor isn't going away and Monday will be a week since they began. Hopefully we'll be able to get an appt with out too much waiting.

@royal57, I hope you will be looking to meet with an MDS if this is an emergency appointment. He or she should know by now what the complications are with DBS and Covid-19 vaccine.

I think your delivery has something to be desired. You can just say "these supplements etc have been shown to protect you from covid 19, if you are concerned about the vaccine think about exploring these options "

There. I fixed it for you :)

Also, the results are mixed about ivermectins effectiveness and there are some very scary interactions between ivermectin and other commonly used medications. Lastly, this video doesnt mention percentages and i cant readily find them. Ill stick with mRNA vaccines and a sure thing verses some experimental ideas. I worked in Covid units temporarily and My father's life os too precious to screw around with.
