B1 totally corrected my swallowing. I no longer have any issues, and haven’t for 2plus years. I take 1000mg a day, but used too take 2000mg.

That’s interesting Connie. After being on HDT injections for 18 months, I recently went to oral Thiamine HCl 1g per day, now down to 500mg. Currently stable at that level.

It’s a fairly common symptom, and a really scary one. I’ve experienced it. At one point I made appointment with speech therapist, but the symptom subsided.

Hi Sugar, another progression of the disease. I'll be 70 years young in December, diagnosed in 2010. I had choking episodes two years ago. I saw a speech pathologist for several weeks. Bottom line - slow down, take smaller bites, drink plenty of fluids at every meal.

This Parkinson's Disease is highly efficient.

Unbelievable the number of ways it attacks.

Really looking forward to the day we counter attack! Take care and keep moving.

This spring and summer, delayed gastric emptying, food not moving well thru duodenum and jejunum. Along that slippery slope, swallowing difficulties began and continue .

Players include branches of the vagus. Some cranial nerves. Alpha-synuclein becoming overproduced, autophagy overwhelmed, a-syn misfolding.

All in service to dysphagia.

Thank you all, I've learned the hard way inhaling a French Fry and coughing for several days. This time along with several others my throat was frozen persay like I get when I go to walk. My brain was saying swallow and nothing was happening. This comes and goes so when I see the Dr. of course everything is working fine and dandy.

Isn’t that the case so many times. I have trouble at times, and then going to the Dr. everything looks ok,

I used to have swallow problems but they went when I began 5-10 minutes singing along with the radio each day. I’ve covered the subject and the scientific research behind using singing in my book "Music as medicine, particularly in Parkinson’s" amazon.com/Music-as-Medicin...

Wow, I will have to try this but it may be scary for others around me, lol.

Activating the vagus nerve through singing, humming, etc is supposed to help with swallowing, breathing and digestion as well. Worth looking into.

A program called Parkinson's Voice Project Live on Facebook offers a live speech therapy session every day free. My husband has problems with speech and swallowing so he tries to do it every day. I am not sure if it's helping a lot, but who knows, maybe he would be much worse if he didn't do it.

No one has mentioned specifically yet, but doing more breathing through your nose as opposed to your mouth might help cut down on inadvertent aspiration, especially while eating. Won't stop the swallowing, but some people (me too) get contact asthma, recycling coughing that makes itself even worse as it goes as a self-increasing cycle, that can last a very long time from the food scraping the very sensitive hairs and nerves in your trachea.

Very much like the singing ideas.

I have the same issue, Look for therapy to help swallowing . You need to exercise your throat to build the muscles in your throat There are Medical devices that also help the swallowing You can find these devices on the internet. Look up medical devices that help improve swallowing. Good luck!

Sugarbear I DEFINITELY would stop trying to force it. This just didn't start without warning. Probably gonna take a while to subside. SEE YOUR DR!

There is a video on Davis Phinney blog about "head forward" posture and difficulty swallowing. Lots of good information there so check it out. Also a good one about oral health.
