Biting inside mouth.

Hi, this is probably a silly question but does anyone else have a problem with biting there inside mouth? Quite often when I'm chewing certain foods I often bite inside my lip or gums which is rather painful. I honestly don't know if it is caused by Parkinsons or just carelessness.

I mostly have the problem after snoring at night. My cheeks stick to my teeth, and I have to push them way with my tongue to keep from biting them. As far as eating, I sometimes have trouble biting my lip. I've usually associated it with emotion, not foreign to PD, but had this issue way before diagnosis with PD.

Once this starts the injured area gets swollen and tends to happen even more. To break this cycle takes a determined effort to change lifelong eating habits - to slow down and chew more carefully.

Parkinsons - The muscles in your face are affected so your cheeks are more likely to be in the way.

I have been complaining of this for well over the past 15 years. My advice is to eat slowly and try to concentrate on not sucking in when your lips are closed and you are chewing.

If you are ab;e to do so, then try to puff your cheeks out when chewing!

Try to be conscious of all your actions, especially when eating.

Interesting! Me, too. Until I was put on Sinemet, I had a real problem with that. Since being on Sinemet, I haven’t had a problem!

Well very interesting!! I bite the right side of my tongue and not so often the cheek. Never thought of PD!!

Dunno whether it's related but ever since I was 5yrs old I've had canker sores. Small, very painful ulcers in my cheeks. They tended to get worse during stressful times. Such as all of high school or finals-week in college. Sometimes they developed after biting my cheek. They're solitary so not herpetiform. Dr google sez they're stress-related or immune-disfunction related. Has PD started in 5 year olds? In college I found tincture of benzoin. Labelled a mucosal astringent. Using a q-tip to dab benzoin on the sore, there was instant pain. Tincture means 'alcohol based'. Then the sore became numb. It's been so long since I had one that the bottle of benzoin tincture has dried out.

I do the exact same thing! I never connected it with PD, but the more I learn about this crazy disease makes me believe it could be possible.

The information sheet attached to my C/L prescription warns users to notify their doctor if they notice any “unusual urges” (e.g., addictive behaviors such as gambling, or sex or alcohol addiction) that they hadn’t experienced prior to taking this medication. I feel this chewing constantly on the lip, side of mouth or tongue to the point of causing sores certainly fits the description of “unusual urges” or obsessive-compulsive behavior. I do this too and never did prior to taking C/L. The urge comes and goes. It’s been a couple weeks now since my last bout with it, but it drives me crazy! Anyway, I would attribute it more to the medication than the Parkinson’s itself.
