I've read of the therapeutic effects of antibiotics in Parkinson's treatment, particularly doxycycline. How can we get ahold of doxycycline?

Low dose Doxycycline may stop the progression of Parkinson's, though the administration of the medication needs to be continued over a lengthy period of time. Some articles have indicated that a low dose of Doxycycline will not lead to antibiotic resistance! What might be the best and most inexpensive source online?

Here is one of the links on this issue, there are quite a few out there: edrugsearch.com/doxycycline...

It’s a prescription drug so you’ll need a drs help. It’s very cheap here in Australia.

I’ve just been trialling it for around 4 months but couldn’t see any results so stopped when I ran out. Maybe I need to try it for longer.

It might require a longer trial! Good luck with this!

It’s available in Mexico, I bought some over the counter last time I was in Cabo. I didn’t try it very long and didn’t notice any benefits.

You can buy on line from India. No

RX needed.

About PD and antibiotics, you could have a look on Dr Thomas Borody's work in Australia.

I have a feeling my hubby's neurologist will not be a proponent. He doesn't believe in supplements. We have an appointment with him in October. Between now and then perhaps I can find more supporting documents for doxy and present to him. For what its worth. :)

This is a prescription drug and not a supplement, Linda so who knows your doctor might be willing to try it especially if your hubby has symptoms of Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth characterized by burping and bloating after eating.

My husband was on doxy for a while when he had Lyme Disease. I'm just not sure the neurologist is open to other RX's other than the usual PD meds. My husband does have GERD (acid reflex). He does take Saccharomyces Boulardii.

I'll add this to our list of "things to talk to neurologist" at next appointment. Thanks for the feedback.

Very interesting! Thanks for sharing. I would imagine it could take some time to notice a difference and human trials would have to last for several years to see if it really works. Do you know what the human dose would be? Wonder what effect at this dose it would have on the Microbiome. If it kills just enough of the "bad bugs" without doing too much damage to more favorable "bugs" especially if you take Saccharomyces Boulardii at the same time, it sounds promising.

Anyone have any thoughts on how to assess those things or know of research on it impact of low dose Doxy?

According to my sister who is a pharmacist, it has no negative effect on stomach bacteria at a dose under 100mg a day. I have also read that elsewhere.

Thanks, Astra7. Will think about asking the doctor for a prescription at my husbands next check-up to see if there are any negative side-effects from it. I suspect my husband has SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) and it may help with that as well. He gets Reflux once or twice a week and often burbs a lot. Have experimented with diet and also having him do some Jin Shin energy flows to help food move down easier and it has improved from what it had been. He sometimes has the feeling the food is stuck in the middle of his chest area and isn't moving down. Will post if he does try it and gets positive results.

You can buy it online at Amazon as an antibiotic for fish tanks without a prescription. One capsule is exactly the same as one for humans.

I looked on Amazon and it is no longer there. Here is a link to a place that sells it and you could try other on line sources, also. I've cured tooth infection with it.

I notice you want doxycycline. I told you about amoxicillin. They work similarly. I have taken both. I am allergic to penicillin.

in reply torhyspeace12

They are not in the same families of antibiotic so will not necessarily have the same effect. Interestingly from drugs.com:

“No, you should not take amoxicillin if you are allergic to penicillin. Amoxicillin belongs to the Penicillin class of antibiotics and must be avoided.”

Interesting. Penicillin gives me hives, makes my knees swell and other problems. Amoxicillin has never bothered me. I'm an RN and I guess I just like to experiment...I'm allergic to yellow jackets too, and I've ended up in the emergency room in shock (after stepping in a nest at the base of an oak tree),I just don't worry about it. Though, I would tell everyone else to be very careful. I also used to take Doxycycline in Mexico, as prescribed by my doctor, so as not to get Montezuma's revenge. It always worked for that.

Some things to keep in mind about Doxycycline because it is a prescription drug which generally means there can be other issues associated with its use :

drugs.com/sfx/doxycycline-s...

Not every user runs into these, but it is worth being aware of the possibility.

I would be interested in results as well. My husband was on a low dose during cataract surgery. - about 2 months - and I don’t see any difference.

We’ve also been told antibiotics kill good gut microbes. I haven’t read any article that addresses this issue who also promotes using antibiotics. I’ve read because it’s a low-dose it will may not hurt to take, but that’s just a guess. If the gut is a link to PD, it seems like you would not want to interfere with your microbiome.

Well I tried it for around 4 months, didn’t notice any improvement so stopped. Immediately after that I began to worsen and have had to increase my very low dose of madapor - from 1/4 tablet 4 times a day to 1/2 tablet 3 times a day. Coincidence? Or have I mucked up my gut flora?

Trying to improve my gut bacteria now with pro biotics and better diet but no improvement so far.
