How ketogenic diets affect brain chemistry?

The fat-fueled brain: unnatural or advantageous?

So the brain is happily deriving energy from ketones – sure, but why would this be protective against such a variety of brain diseases?

Good article, thanks for posting. Around 6 months ago I attended a series of classes with a local nutritionist, all about Keto. I read Mercola's book "Fats for Fuel" and some articles and gave it a try. I'm still doing Keto, but let me say this: It's not an easy diet. Keeping carb intake below 50g per day is not easy. Intermittent fasting, a central part of the regimen, is not easy. Getting the required amount of healthy fats into you per day is also, believe it or not, not easy. You're riding a knife edge. When everything is going well you feel great and have plenty of energy. Burning ketones is it's own kind of high. When you fall off, well, you just need to readjust and get back on. I've learned a lot about nutrition in the process. I won't go into it all here. Bottom line: I've lost weight and kept it off. When I started I weighed 186. I weighed myself yesterday and was 170. John Pepper is fond of saying the most useful thing about pharmaceuticals is they make you feel well enough to exercise. One could say the same about diet. I struggle with PD symptoms every day, but my energy is good and I exercise and train every day. At this point I cannot imagine going back to a carb based diet. My one piece of advice: get a nutritionist or coach to help you along the way, particularly getting started. There are lots of resources out there. I've got the Keto Diet app on my phone, that helps. Along with thyroid treatment, Keto helped my husband get rid of diabetes and Alzheimer's.

I have seen this work first hand for our next door neighbors little boy when he was diagnosed with Epilepsy. He was put on tablets and was like a zombie. His father twarled the internet and finally found and switched him to a Ketogenic diet and never looked back after taking months of weaning him off his tablets. I keep trying this myself ( to help support my sister now should we go down that road in the future) but agree with Redboat2 finding it very hard to reduce carb intake enough ( and that’s just from veg) and taking enough fats in. Project in progress still!
