I have my doubts about whether or not I have PD so i am going to have a Datscan done. Does anyone know if the dye they inject makes you feel sick? Thanks for any info.
I just saw the other post on this subject. (sorry for being repetitive) Everyone says what a long procedure it is... how long does it take?

I have done DatScan last year. I was at the hospital in the morning at 9AM.I was given an injection (IV) and asked to go back within 3-4 hours to have the actual scan. The scan took around 35-40 minutes. They sent me some Iodine capsules days before the scan with an instruction how to take them. Iodine protects the thyroid gland from being exposed to the radioactive injection.
I didn’t have any side effects and the results were ready the following day.
Hiya, I had a Datscan going through my diagnosis. I had to drink the iodine. If I'm honest it's the worst thing I've ever tasted and couldn't get rid of the taste for days...but....it was worth having to finalise my diagnosis. Good luck. Amanda
I've had four! I've had it with a drink (tasteless, for me) and pills. The only annoying thing IMHO is lying still for 30-ish minutes. I bring my iPhone and listen to music--that helps. And no, the dye they inject does not make me feel sick, at all.
Why did you have so many scans?
Research study! It's one of the ways they follow your progress. I believe that if the DaTscan is positive, you can be pretty certain you have some form of PD. But I'm not sure it's exactly quantitative, meaning, a "worse score" doesn't necessarily correlate with symptoms. I think.
That doesn't seem to stop the research scientists from wanting to do it. It is, supposedly, tracking your loss of dopamine,
Hi Darkflower - it felt just like an MRI, with no ill effects. Plus, the information it provides is invaluable. I agree with Amy about bringing music.
I have been asked by any people to take a DatScan, to prove to them that I have Pd, but even a DatScan is not 100% proof that we have Pd. So even if you go to that expense, whoever is paying for it, it is not the final answer.
You don’t have to prove anything to anybody, Mr. Pepper. You have stated your status and the importance of exercise, with PD, which is backed up by many medical professionals. Thank you for your advice and opinion. People have a choice to take it or leave it.
Thank you for your responses. I am just a little nervous about the dye due to that new ad on tv about toxic MRI dye injections that damaged internal organs,etc. I have been diagnosed as having PD 17 years now but there is this little voice that tells me that they don't have my diagnosis correct. Maybe it is just wishful thinking and I am wasting my time.
I had a DAT Scan in 2006 at The Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) Newcastle England, it was interpreted as positive by Professor David Bates however, he said that machines are not infallible and that he was “optimistic”, a word that doesn’t jive with Parkinson’s.
In 2014 I consulted Professor Erle Lim a Neurologist in Singapore, he asked me where and how was I diagnosed, I explained about the DAT Scan , he said that Singhealth did not trust this method of diagnosis, as they had encountered many inconclusive results and wasted a bunch of time, money and effort. He then went on to tell me that I didn’t have Parkinson’s.
There must be a “standard method” for diagnosing any illness I would have thought but, it appears not, maybe someone here can update me.
Yes. It’s likke a cat scan but different because you actual can see your brain and determine how much dopamine you have. I could telll by the images that I had lost a lot of my dopamine. With this scan it confirmed to my doctor and myself that I had Parkinsons. Itbink. I had lost 60-70% at that time.

My husband had a Datscan couple of years ago to confirm his diagnosis. Its takes pretty much a full day. He had no side effects.
