Parkinson’s: Forgetting to turn off the gas stove.

Tonight, I smelled something cooking but on the verge of burning. I peeked out from the kids room, and noticed the flame on. When I asked him if he was cooking something he said, “No? The stove is off.”

And then he went down to turn it off.

This hasn’t happened in about a month. But it was happening quite a bit maybe 3-4 months ago, only with the toaster oven (set to bake).

This seems to be a sporadic symptom?

I’m not sure what to call it.

But is it common with Parkinson’s to do that sometimes?

He gets hungry in the middle of the night, and I can’t stop him from going into the kitchen and cooking. It’s pretty frequent. If you’ve had this, what’s been a remedy? Med change?

I used to own a special cat 🐱. One time I left a burner on and the pot smoked. This cat let out a loud wail. Get yourself a special cat ☺

LOL! I've got 3 cats but apparently none of them are "special."

A couple of years back I found myself raiding the fridge at night on a regular basis, I wasn’t hungry really but, I had an urge to eat anything that was available. Now my wife empties the fridge before I am tempted to eat everything, I was getting fatter and fatter. I asked my Neurologist about this behavior and he attributed it to the medication.

Which medication?

I think It was a Dopamine Agonist I think but, I am not certain about this. I have read that this type of medicine can lead to gambling addiction, or spending addiction. Does that make sense?

Thank you park_bear

Oh yes. Dopamine Agonists are notorious for that.

Thank you park_bear, knowing about these bizarre side effects helped to me resist temptation. My wife watches my behavior for anything out of the ordinary.

i do all of my own cooking and yess I have done this before on an electric stove. i try very hard to use timers to keep me from forgetting and the majority of the time it works. i cook almost everyday and burn something maybe once every four months. those are my real spacey days. but the smell alerts me. fortunately i still have my sense of smell.

i dont suppose you could get him to use the microwave instead? just a thought.... :)

No. Lol. The microwave doesn’t have a door on it bc the 3rd day after installing it above the stove, he lost balance and grabbed the handle and ripped it off.
