I have a bad relationship with sugar. Sugar is a temptation for me and too much sugar messes me up - I get a sugar high and then crash. It also makes me hungry.
Some things are ok, like berries and other fruit that are a bit tart. Need to be true to bear nature with nuts, berries and salmon.
I found that if I stop sweets altogether the craving goes away fairly quickly. In fact the sugary sweets are no longer attractive at all -- too sweet! My trreats? Banana and almond butter.
It is a huge negative cycle...you consume sugar, which causes inflammation, which causes loss of dopamine, which causes craving for sugar, you consume sugar, which causes more inflammation. etc.
My dad had PD and had a HUGE sweet tooth. It was famous in our family. You could always count on my dad eating sweets instead of meals. His teeth were always iffy so he stuck with baked goods and chocolates. I don't even care for sweets in general but I fight off a craving at least once a day. It does pass or I eat an apple to help feed the brain. It does help to not have them in my house. If my partner buys them, they are to be hidden so I don't even know about them. I don't want to be tempted.
This sounds so interesting... when I lost the weight it came off so easy.. I ate every couple of hours and cut back portions, but indulged in a dish of frozen yogurt every night and no eating after 6:00pm.
Thank you all so much for getting my head back on to straight .
Wow, I never knew about sugar. I have always had a terrible sweet tooth. Even now lately I will go to a bakery up the road and buy a piece of cake or two for lunch fairly regularly. I didn't think it was any big deal.
My husband lives on sweets and when I lost the weight I was in a mindset, but then I got out of it.. II’m going to wait until after thanksgiving, but then start it again
My husband has PD and should loose 30-40 pounds and has lost 20 so far. We are now eating no added sugar and no bad carbs. We eat maple syrup, honey and coconut sugar - we make fabulous desserts with these sugars only. NO cane sugar at all. We are not deprived at all and he gets his sugar fix. The carbs are hard but he's doing it. Carbs make the big belly and his is going down a lot. Also he's doing Boxing for Parkinson's once a week for an hour. So eat your sweets but just the right ones!!
Coconut sugar is derived from the coconut - not as sweet as the others but sweet none the less. NO don't use any of the artificial sweeteners!! Better to use maple syrup or honey in your coffee if that's what you're using it for. If you look online at recipes for no added sugars and low carbs you'll find a wealth of info. Also it makes less aisles you have to go up and down on in the grocery store because most of them are just full of carbs!! Pastas, cookies and crackers, chips the list goes on.......... Good luck!!
Oh I said all that and didn't tell you where to find the coconut sugar!! You can find it in the grocery stores in the sugar section even Walmart has it so it's easy to find.
It's very common for Parkies to lose wait. I've lost 55 lbs in 1 1/2 years (I think) Crazy thing is, I am not dieting. about 50% of us lose and half don't. Doesn't seem to affect the out come. I've been reading that it's from a slowing down of the body. I eat half what I used to now.
But Yes, I crave chocolate and cakes in the evening after my last dose. I can eat what I want. How ironic. I guess it's the sugar that falls in our lemonade.
