mucuna pruriens

Can anyone please help me find where to purchase mucuna pruriens in powder form at 98%? I found it at powdercity.com but cannot get the web site to complete an order, and they do not answer my email. Other web sites have mucuna pruriens at 20% but I would like to try 98% in hopes of better results. Thank you!

How much mucuna pruriens do you take each day? I wish I had some guidance on dosage.

parkie13 in reply totbirchf

I take an eighth of a teaspoon it's a level eighth of a teaspoon 3 times a day. I did buy a scale and an eighth of a teaspoon is 500 mg. I use a kitchen measuring teaspoon. At first I was weighing it out to 500 mg but that's what it is it's an eighth of a teaspoon. It does upset my stomach after a while so I have a few grapes or a piece of fruit. Myself I'm getting less of a relief than before. I do try not to ingest protein before or after taking it for an hour or so Mary

tbirchf in reply toparkie13

Thank you, Mary. Your reply is a big help. We'll start with eighth tsp 3 times a day. This is for my husband. He is taking carb/levo 3 times a day, and we are hoping to decrease his dosage of carb/levo if the mucuna pruriens works well for him.

I think we over-dosed him the first day he tried it because he did not feel well at all. The next day was a really good day for him, but I cannot get him to try it again. I felt badly because something I urged him to take made him feel so awful for the day.

You can find 100%, pharmaceutical grade Mucuna Pruriens Extract here: nutrivitashop.com/products/...

It is excellent! There is no taste to it; I take it in water on an empty stomach. It works every time with no eventual loss of effectiveness. There is no augmentation either. God bless.

First of all, I would NOT recommend taking prescription medication with Mucuna. It would be an overdose. Taking Mucuna by itself will take some experimentation. I find that 1/2 tsp. in a glass of water (4-6 oz. or whatever you like) on an empty stomach (after it absorbs--15-30 minutes) gives me four hours of relief from all symptoms and puts me to sleep. I need no sleep aid with Mucuna. My advice is to experiment. Start small and see what relief you get. My stomach cannot handle more than 1/2 tsp. at a time.

Thanks for the advise, Marcia. I don't want to mix prescription medicine with mucuna, but my husband cannot just stop taking the carbo/leva he has been taking for 5 years. I am seeing some of the dyskinesia which I think is from increasing dosages of carbo/leva, so we are hoping to cut back on the prescription dosage with help from mucuna. I wish I had more help on dosages of the two taken together!

Do you get your mucuna from Powdercity?

SuperMNew profile image
SuperMNew in reply totbirchf

No he should not just stop taking his meds. You might try decreasing meds and use a slight amount of Mucuna. This may be an experiment for you and him, but believe me! It will be worth the switch eventually. Both his medication and mucuna provide dopamine. Meds are not natural, but mucuna is. Mucuna is a bean. Always use the extract.

tbirchf in reply toSuperMNew

Thanks for your supportive words! I called the neurologist to ask about taking mucuna and of course he said don't take it because the amount of ldopa in the powder/capsules is not known. Sometimes we have to take our health into our own hands and do what we feel is best. At this time, I believe that means trying to lower the dosage of prescribed medicine and replace it with mucuna. Let's keep in touch, I'll let you know how it goes when our mucuna powder from Nutravita arrives!

SuperMNew in reply totbirchf

Yes, let's stay in touch. I took back my own health more than 20 years ago and have been so glad I did. Taking my physician's advice then would have riddled my body with chemotherapy and radiation and would have meant my demise years ago. I now am cancer free because I took charge of my health. As with anything, take small steps to see what works for you. Remember that mucuna pruriens has been used for hundreds of years in India with excellent results. It wouldn't have been used for that long if it didn't work. It is a natural approach to controlling symptoms of Parkinsons and RLS. But go slow.

My husband tried the mucuna powder from Nutrivitashop this morning and within 20 minutes he had to lie down on the sofa, he was so nauseated and sweaty. He took 1/8 tsp on an empty stomach. I don't know if he will ever take it again!

tbirchf profile image
tbirchf in reply toSuperMNew

Good news! After the overdose of mucuna last Sunday, my husband felt better than ever the next day! So now he is taking about 1/10th of the dose of mucuna he took on Sunday twice a day to replace 1/2 pill of carbo/leva twice a day, and he is feeling great. I no longer see the dyskinesia, at least for now. We are praying these results continue, and maybe we can gradually replace more of his carbo/leva with mucuna.

SuperMNew profile image
SuperMNew in reply totbirchf

I chuckled at your post! I am so glad he felt much better. He may yet have some pretty rough times as he detoxes from prescription meds. I have absolutely NO augmentation or detoxification symptoms from mucuna, but I'm just going on two years with it. I pray you have good results as you cautiously proceed. You're on the right track, I think.

tbirchf profile image
tbirchf in reply toSuperMNew

Glad you got a chuckle! Ha! I think we are on the right track, too. Are you totally on mucuna with no carbo/leva?

SuperMNew profile image
SuperMNew in reply totbirchf

Yes, I'm totally on mucuna and have been for 2 years, starting my third year at the end of November. Years ago I decided to take charge of my own health. I take NO prescription drugs. I tried drugs when I was at my lowest point, and ended up a mess!!! I researched and found what works for both Parkinsons and RLS, and now I simply won't take drugs. I wish you and your husband great success with this natural substance. It surely has worked for me. (And actually many people for hundreds of years.) I think people are afraid of it because they aren't given a "script" by a doctor. Research into Mucuna Pruriens will show quite a safety record. But users must go slowly to see what works for them. Seems like no one is the same. Blessings!

tbirchf profile image
tbirchf in reply toSuperMNew

Do you take anything for the carbo part of carbo/leva? My understanding is you need the carbo part in order for the Ldopa to be absorbed or passed through the blood brain barrier, whatever. I thought my husband would need to stay on some of the carbo/leva for this reason.

I take one EGCg capsule, 400 mgs with the mucuna every dose. It is green tea extract. Green Tea helps extend the effectiveness of the mucuna. Nothing else. The mucuna is absorbed very well without anything else. But I do take the green tea extract when I want to sleep longer. If I have to get up early for some reason, I leave off the green tea capsule and just take the mucuna. It is absorbed completely anyway, all by itself. I would be careful taking anything else with the mucuna. It will do the job by itself. Does your husband have Parkinsons or RLS?

He is doing ok, but I can see symptoms getting worse and friends have said the same. He is not one to take his health into his own hands like SuperMNew, so I have to read and recommend from what I read, then I feel responsible when he feels badly such as when he took MP. He is pretty much done with experimenting, wants to just follow doctor's prescription of LevaDopa and modify that a bit depending on how he feels. I am trying to persuade him to do acupuncture, I don't think it will help physical symptoms much, but might help his anxiety and general well being.

Hi, my husband is on azilect and sifrol. Diagnosed 2 yrs ago . I think soon they will want him on Leva dopa but I m trying to avoid that. Can he still stay on those drugs with MP?

SuperMNew profile image
SuperMNew in reply tomunchybunch

It is very tricky to take MP when your husband is taking prescription drugs. That would give him an overdose, I dropped the drugs and went through withdrawal before I started MP. It's not pleasant but with drugs the doctor kept giving more and stronger doses, and he told me he would change me to a stronger prescription and would probably have to increase the dosage of that drug eventually. I could see very soon that I would hit the wall and I decided to find a natural dopamine, and I found mucuna pruriens. I read the research and decided if I was going to live, I would be in charge of my own health. And I'm glad I did. For me, it was the answer. And if I take too much, I get sick, so I respect the MP. I found the dosage that worked for me but it was trial and error. I cannot and will not prescribe a treatment for anyone. All I can do is tell you what worked for me and what has worked for many, many PD patients in India where MP has been used as a treatment for hundreds of years. God bless. I hope you can find your way through all this.

munchybunch profile image
munchybunch in reply toSuperMNew

Do you mean just leva dopa or any prescriptions. I heard that you can combine leva dopa and mucuna to make it last longer. My husband takes azilect and Sifrol. Do u think that would be ok? Thanks

SuperMNew profile image
SuperMNew in reply tomunchybunch

If you combine prescription drugs with mucuna, you will get an overdose. MP is a natural extract made from the bean. It is powerful. Prescription drugs are chemicals and seem to be effective for most folks for a limited period of time. Then another drug, more powerful, is usually prescribed. I could see that was not the way I wanted to live. I stopped drugs and went through withdrawal symptoms. It was ick!! I started taking MP but not until I had stopped drugs. Please research mucuna pruriens and be sure this is what you want to do. There is a good bit of information on the Internet about it. If you purchase MP, get the 100% pharmaceutical grade EXTRACT, not the ground up beans. That won't help you at all with PD symptoms. After much research, and going through capsules that gave me very little long-term relief, I found NutriVita website. Here is their link: nutrivitashop.com/l-dopa-10...

God bless you. I hope this helps.

munchybunch profile image
munchybunch in reply toSuperMNew

Even if he’s not yet on leva dopa? So he needs to stop all meds for how long before he starts mp? Thanks

SuperMNew profile image
SuperMNew in reply tomunchybunch

When he stops prescription meds, his body will react. It's called withdrawal. And that can be nasty, depending on how long and how strong the drugs he's been on. If it was me, I would cut in half prescription drugs for about a week and supplement with a small amount of mucuna to compensate and perhaps relieve some of the withdrawal symptoms. Stopping prescription drugs all the way is up to you, but if that's what he wants to do, he can then cut the half dose again in half and increase slightly the mucuna. You would then be attempting to ease out of the drugs and into mucuna. This would be a trial and experiment on his part. If you use the 100% MP extract from nutrivita, it is pharmaceutical grade and as powerful as drugs, but it is natural. You will need to find a dose that is right for him. This may not be a good time transiting between drugs and MP, and you'll have to weigh the pros and cons for yourself. Bless you! I wish you the best!

Thanks for yr info. I’m just thinking is this a good time to try it as at the moment he’s only on 1 g azilect and 1.5 of Sifrol. I have a feeling at the next appointment they will suggest sinemet and we really want to avoid that if at all possible. What are the withdrawal symptoms ? Thanks

SuperMNew profile image
SuperMNew in reply totbirchf

Wondering if he is taking any other meds, or if he is detoxing from meds? For your info, I've had that reaction. It did not deter me, but I backed off the dosage. Perhaps you should try half the dose you gave him.

tbirchf profile image
tbirchf in reply toSuperMNew

Thank you for your advice! Yes, he was trying to cut down on his meds while adding mucuna, and regretfully I am sure I had him take too much mucuna. It took nearly 12 hours for him to get rid of feeling nasty and nauseated, so I am not sure I will ever get him to try mucuna again. He was on the sofa almost all day, not like him. I feel badly for not starting out with a lower dose. I am just thankful he is feeling back to normal now and will pray he can have the courage to try again with a much lower dose of mucuna.

My husband has been trying this week to take the mucuna powder from Nutravita in small doses (50mg) to replace 1/2 pill of carbo/levo twice a day (25-100mg), but the powder upsets his stomach every time even in the small dose (about 50mg). He is going back to 1 1/2 pill of carbo/levo twice a day then trying to go down to just 1/2 pill of carba/levo in evening instead of the prescribed 1 pill in the evening because he generally feels really good in the evening. How are you doing?

SuperMNew profile image
SuperMNew in reply totbirchf

I am doing very well, thank you. When I take too much Mucuna, I get an upset stomach; in fact, I usually throw up! I am wondering if your husband is getting side effects or withdrawal "kick back" from drugs. I really don't know. But I do know when the body is detoxing from drugs, the withdrawal is 'hell,' according to those of us who have gone through it.

tbirchf in reply toSuperMNew

Oh ok, not sure we are talking apples to apples then, as my husband has Parkinsons, not with tremors, but he has rigidity especially in his hands and some swallowing/throat related problemsand just generally slow doing most everything. We are happy with where he is but I am thinking proactive, want to prevent him from getting worse. I don't know if I can get him to try the powdered mucuna again (it's no fun to feel sick) but I still think it would be worthwhile for him to try an even smaller dose and replace some of the carba/levo.

I understand your caution, and you are using caution, I can see that. Just FYI, Mucuna Pruriens is used heavily and has been for hundreds of years in India to TREAT PARKINSONS. There are at least two books, maybe more written about remedies in Parkinson's Disease. If I had PD, I would be following this book. I downloaded it on my Kindle more than a year ago, and it is spot on. (Don't know if you live in the USA or where, or what availability you have on Amazon.Com. That's where I purchased the Kindle download.) Title: NATURAL REMEDIES IN PARKINSON'S DISEASE by Dr. Rafael Gonzalez Maldonado. This is an excellent book. I am using Mucuna in a secondary "position" by treating my RLS. Primarily, Mucuna is used for Parkinsons. God bless you as you pursue remedies for your husband.

I follow Silvestrov's protocol. My symptoms are yet mild and while it doesn't help with tremors, it does seem to help with fatigue and mood as well as stiffness. I use capsules rather than powder, taking 470mg per dose, generally once a day, sometimes twice. Scroll down on this link for more info. There are some suggestions regarding dosage.
