Run before I can walk

Got diagnosed with Parkinson's 24jan this year. After nearly two years of the symptoms. I go to physio therapy as I had trouble walking,my balance was not too good. Yet i can run short distances 5m or5yards without any aid. Tommy

I use a walking stick to avoid stumbling,

Hi Tommy.

12 months ago I had problems walking . (and still have) but I saw my wife had started " couch to 5 km run in 10 weeks". I had run reasonably well about 45 yrs ago so I thought "let's give it a try". I did not join her group as it was for ladies only !!!!

First couple of times out I fell over. I could not look down at the ground or I would end up on the floor. I could not check my watch. All I could do was " stand up straight, swing your arms and look straight ahead". 6 months later I was regularly taking part in 5km Parkruns. My times have come steadily down. I no longer fall or trip over. I can now look over my shoulder and check for pot holes . It was hard work (but I have loved every minute) I still have problems walking and getting in and out of cars. My voice is rubbish and my handwriting is typical PD jiberish. But I can run. Don't ask how or why "cos I don't have a clue" my confidence in my ability to live life to the full has been expanded beyond all my expectations. Mike
