It looks to me like clever marketing for the alternative coffeemaker it plugs at the end!

You are right, it does look like some alternative promotion, although there are other sources on internet about dangers of plastics in food containers/appliances.

My husband and I both like fresh coffee. Gave up our drip coffee maker long time ago. I use a small metal strainer fine mesh, put it over a cup and put coffee in it and pour boiling water over it. It's been working out really well for us. If you like it hot you have to preheat your cup.
