Ask to change your signature on your signature card at the bank. I made my signature as short and easy as possible. Before I got on meds writing was something I simply could not do and even had to have office staff fill out medical forms for me when I went to the doctor. Good luck!

I doubt if you're going to like this answer, but I do on-line banking and I very rarely have to write a check.

Get a stamp made of your signature and just stamp it.

They are used by business every day

they dont have it in South africa as far as i am aware. just as well...with our corruption. it would open us up to, ''my stamp was stolen, that is where R10 billion went.''

"Micrographia" Signatures, once established as yours, are easy. You can usually control the legibility of the first letter of your name, then just let Parkie loose to lapse into his unintelligible scribble for the rest of your name. As long as the signatures are consistent and fairly difficult to duplicate, they are usually and easily accepted and, in addition, the unreadable scrawl makes you look like somebody famous and "in control". As for trying to "jot down" telephone or other incoming info, that's very frustrating. Oh, Well, checks (and cash) will be obsolete very soon,,,,replaced by who knows what......

yikes. i just usually got other people to write it down.

Ha, "jotting down" is a thing of the past! Maybe I need to use the recorder in my phone for such stuff.

My bank has made a note on my account but also asked me to regularly update my signature with them, which I keep forgetting to do, but nothing rejected so far.

Did u tell them why u were changing ur signature?

Jeansm profile image

Yes. I was worried about possibility of cheques being rejected so I mentioned it at the counter. I updated signature that day and note was made by the teller.

Thanks, did that but the bank made me sign a card 3 times and they would pick the best when needed

Thanks for your reply. I am glad to know banks will be understanding hopefully, when we cross that bridge.

yes. its horrible. mine is a scribble that i thought only i could recognize, but come the tremor i could hardly keep my pen to paper. shopping with a card was worst.

I would go to the bank and record my new signature and explain the problem.

If you have a stamp made you need to register at your bank on your signature card.

Thats what I used at our company for years so I would not have to sign my name on all the payroll checks etc... simple solution

Thanks all, I'll research having a stamp made.

The idea of a signature stamp is a great one. I went into Staples, they had me sign my name and make the stamp while I was waiting. My handwriting has also deteriorated considerably but I find that if I take the time to write slowly and think in terms of drawing my signature and not writing it it looks the same as it did years ago. If you can still use a computer you might have the option of using a program like Quicken to write your checks for you. I use QuickBooks, which allows you to incorporate your signature into the check so when the check prints your signature is printed as well. I never had to register any of this with the bank and have never had a problem with the checks being accepted. Also, depending upon the quality of your speech, there is the option of using speech to text software. I use that almost exclusively now on the computer. I find it much easier than trying to control my fingers on the keyboard. This feature is built into Windows 10 and there are excellent programs for the Mac and Windows made by Dragon. Parkinson's disease presents constant and evolving challenges. This form is a wonderful resource to learn how others have coped.

My husband would spend hours writing his name. with each try the letters became larger and more legible. It was a form of therapy for him. His fine motor skills had deteriorated dramatically and this helped him.

You can just do a cross if they have that on their records

On line banking is a must...... Move to a smaller town where everyone knows you. That is a problem! Mention "counter checks", or just "check (book&register) to anyone under 30 and you get a blank stare.

Thanks all for the wonderful ideas, put all of them to work. Have done online banking since DOS existed, but occasionally one has to write a check i.e. to the IRS! Went to the bank and they made me sign a card three times, said any of them will do, also wrote Parkinson. Had a stamp made and will use it + my signature.

I hope others have also gain.

I was gifted and ink pen that is very weighted, larger in circumference, and has a gyroscope in it to offset tremor. It works beautifully for limited writing such as checks, etc

Where did you get, does it have a name to it? Amazon.com ?

Hi RobertoOcana. I have been unable to write in cursive script since 1968. I had to start writing in block letters then, and had to continue doing this now in 2016. I have been able to find ways of overcoming most of my Pd symptoms and at the age of 82 I still live a normal active life, medication-free for the past 14 years.

Visit my website - reverseparkinsons.net and read over 400 articles on how to deal with Pd. You are welcome to write to me if you have any questions.
