These are either called hypnagogic or hypnapompic hallucinations depending on whether they occur in the first hour or so of sleep or the last hour or so. Either when you're entering deep sleep or leaving it. I've had them for twenty plus years, though I don't see your mother! I see swarms of flies or animals! Sometimes I leap out of bed to get out of the way! People without PD often have them. I do think tiredness might be a factor. I'll have a patch of them, then am free for some time. I always go straight back to sleep after and they're not frightening!

My friend has seen her mother like that off and on for thirty years and she doesn't even have PD. That said, PD does often bring hallucinations, either from the disease or the meds. Suggest you read my posts re our experiences with this or google Abram hoffner who used niacin to successfully treat hallucinations in schizophrenics. It interrupts the chemistry of adrenochrome (and maybe dopa chrome) which is almost identical to LSD. A little of those is good, too much causes hallucinations. In our case, it was from taking a MAOI but also probably due to my husband being a major adrenaline type in the first place. After six months of unbearable hallucinations, they stopped in one day with 1000mg niacin ( not nicinamide) 3x daily. Stopped in a day. It took six months to clear his system of the drug and before we could stop those high doses. Maybe you could consider a good B complex, maybe time released since it happens early in am. Remember B is water soluable and needs consistent replacement. C and B are both stress vitamins and God knows PDers are under stress.

Also...the hallucination always involved seeing a person going around a corner, a dog in a corner, and bugs. There are apparently tens of thousands who have this kind of hallucination if one Googles. There is even a name for it...parasitosis as in psychosis about parasites (bugs)!!!

I see that this issue has provoked a large response so I shall be brief. In 2006 I had a breakdown largely to due stress at work. One of the worst symptoms were "night terrors" which appear to be one type of hallucination to which reference is being made. I was referred to my local Community Psychiatric Nurse team & never looked back. (This is UK). I do not have any similar symptoms from PD or the meds.

No hallucinations but vivid dreams where I do a lot of shouting.

Yes, Parkinsons can cause hallucinations and delusions and the meds can bring them on or the disease itself. Having vivid dreams is also very common. If you look at the web sites of the national Parkinson organisations they all have information on this. Your meds may need adjusting
