It's quite normal to get mucus discharge from your bottom after colostomy surgery, although not always very welcome! Mucus is a natural lubricant in the bowel that helps move your poo along. After colostomy surgery your rectum (what remains of it) doesn't realise it doesn't need to carry on producing mucus so it keeps doing it! It's often possible to pass it by gently bearing down on the loo. If it gets hard or is uncomfortable to pass you can get suppositories that can help loosen and soften it. If it's very copious, frequent or contains blood a doctor should take a look. Hope this helps :)

Hi I have always had a mucus discharge which has never been what I would call regular as I can go weeks or even months without discharge. Then at other times I'd have a build up 2 or 3 times a week. Luckily I'm able to pass this on the loo which i find easier with a full bladder for some strange reason.

Hi Duttonpat!

It is normal to have the 'baring down' sensation and pass the mucus. A couple of things which help make the process a bit more comfortable are Glycerine suppositories and irrigation with warm water via a thin flexible tube and syringe.

Is it an option for the rectal stump to be removed?

hello milly15, i'm also wheelchair bound and had the same problem it was severe , my colorectal surgeon made an EUA operation i'm now free of the mucus problem .piease talk to your surgeon .

I too have suffered with rectal mucus secretion for a long time - my ileostomy op was in 1998 - and the discharge soils my pants regularly. Thank you that this is a natural process of my rectal stump still being in place. Ian, England

Hello, I have crohns and have a colostomy since about 2005 and have always had mucus issues, but most of the time I have sharp bad pain and cramps then I have to run to the bathroom (loo) and usually there is some blood. I always tell my specialist but nothing has ever been said or done about it so I have always taken that to mean that it's normal. Any thoughts?

So sorry for your husband. I too get a lot of Mucus. I was told it would cease but since my first colostomy in 2013, it is still continuing. Does anyone else know if this Mucus will ever stop, it can get so uncomfortable!..
