Is it completely unusual for a female to have a heart attack at 56?
No- one I know has heard of anyone ?
Does anyone know why this would happen?

Hello Mags and welcome. I am not an expert but I am interested in this, as I am 57!
From my general reading I have picked up that women usually lag about ten years behind men in getting heart disease. The established theory is that the female hormones protect women which is why they used to prescribe HRT to protect women. However didn't this lead to an increase in breast cancer (?) and is not now used so much.
I have heard of women in their thirties getting heart attacks and I know that the signs and symptoms of heart attacks are different in women. I have also read that women don't recover as well. Sorry if this is a bit of a "hotch potch" of knowledge!
Sorry Mags, have just read your profile. Did you have a high cholesterol level ? It sounds like you have made a good recovery.
Hi, I don't know if I had high cholesterol as I had never had it checked, i did have symptoms and was sent for checks but was told all was normal, then had a heart attack 3 weeks later. I hope I have more luck at recovering than you
have read ! I had my heart attack 3 weeks ago, asked the question because my hrt tablets say as poss side effects .
