And what happens when you stop taking them?

What does your doctor say?

Only been on them for 6 weeks, and didn't think I could just stop them ? can't see a Dr for 2 weeks.

It is an emergency so ask for an emergency appointment. Just imagine how much more your stomach will blow up in another 2 weeks.

Insist you are seen now.

I was on Ramipril for a month (2.5mg) I developed a tickling cough and my BP didn't come down so my doctor switched me to losarten which is more expensive but after 2 weeks the BP has started to drop, and there have been no side effects to date, and the cough has cleared. Ask you doctor for a different medicine - they are there to help you!

I have been on many b/pressure meds, I was on Lercanidipine these past 2 years which seemed to suit me [the others were messing up my potassium ] However I started to get very swollen feet and it wasn't controlling my b/pressure anymore so the Doc. started me on Ramipril, apart from the swelling tummy which is very uncomfortable they seem to be keeping my b/pressure under control, but it's early days yet, I also have Chronic Kidney disease.

Strange how we all react differently with the same medication, and nice that we can share our health/medication issues on this site

Thanks.

Lercanidipine is a calcium channel blocker, which one of the side effect is oedema which is swelling in part of your body (mainly at feet because of gravity)

Hi, I took this for two years without any problems. Get it checked, it might not agree with you or it could be something else xx

Thank you all for your reply's , I will see Doc. next week.

As I have Kidney disease the oedema/bloating could be related to that,?

I have tried so many b/pressure tablets in the past, lets hope I will eventually get one that suits me.

I was just curious to know if anyone else had the bloating tummy whilst taking Ramipril.

yes, you should tell your GP about kidney problem, oedema because ramipril is an ACE inhibitor which has major side effect on your kidney and use be use with caution; and if you are on diuretic and ramipril, it might alter the potassium level in your body (which is bad for the heart and muscle) due to both of them alter the kidney filtration of potassium. Your GP might low the ramipril dose to reduce the side effect. If GP isn't much help, try talking to the pharmacist, usually they have a better understand on medicine and what to do with side effect. Have you tried beta blocker (like propranolol)?

My GP knows of my kidney disease it's on file, and I don't take a diuretic because of my potassium, I also take Bisoprolol

I am having a scan this week for the distended stomach, so my GP is doing his best and got the X/ray appointment pretty quick.

Like I said in my last post I was just curious as to whether anyone else had the distension with the Ramipril, as I have never had it with any other b/pressure meds. however we all react differently and this bloating could be something entirely different and not associated with the Ramipril,

I suggest you change to another drug for high blood pressure such as atenolol. I've had no problem with this drug.o suggest you ask your GP about it

most hypertension side effect causes stomach disturbance however different medicine react differently inside different people ( that why it is a pharmacist dream to make personalised medication), reason why people might have this side effect and some don't.

Change to Amlodipine. I suffered stomach trouble for years

until I eventually landed in A & E with a severe allergic reaction

which they attributed to Ramipril even though I had been taking it

for years, The A & E consultant asked if I had been suffering with

stomach trouble when he saw that I was taking Ramipril, so it must

be a fairly well known side effect. So I stopped Ramipril and started

Amlodipine instead. I have been feeling absolutely fine since. But my

GP should have taken m off Ramipril years ago since I have been

complaining of stomach trouble all the time and even went for an

endoscopy I think they called it with a camera up the derriere.

Thank you for your reply.

I have had a problem with my gall stones recently, it seems more so since taking Ramipril, ? I do have diverticula disease, and an irritable bowel, so maybe Ramipril is not for me ? I have an appointment to see my GP next week so will ask if I can change to another blood pressure med. I have tried so many and they all seem to have their side effects, and as I have kidney disease I need to keep my B/P low.

in reply tobowler

Your problem seems very similar to mine so I hope a change to Amlodipine will solve your problem. I had exactly the same problems as you with diverticula disease and irritable bowel syndrome. When I changed to Amlodipine my stomach immediately settled down so much that I have abandoned my Lactulose which sometimes used to help a bit. I do hope you will get as rapid an improvement as I did!
