Not sure what if any the benefits are but I have been using them for a few months, I reckon I feel better for taking them although my doctor would not say one way or the other if they are good or bad. I was diagnosed with fatty liver.

I read an article from the US that said they had shown benefits for liver issues as well as general digestive problems.

I would check with your specialist or doctor but I reckon they do something.

Hi

Review this link...

webmd.com/vitamins-suppleme...

I would be careful using without medical ok, specially with you now being on the transplant list mate. Might be fine but so e of the side effects seem hares and might already add to the symptoms and side effects you already have.

A good site to check for information on subjects like this is the American National Institute for health (just google NIH). They say

What the Science Says

Previous laboratory studies suggested that milk thistle may benefit the liver by protecting and promoting the growth of liver cells, fighting oxidation (a chemical process that can damage cells), and inhibiting inflammation. However, results from small clinical trials of milk thistle for liver diseases have been mixed, and two rigorously designed studies found no benefit.

A 2012 clinical trial, cofunded by NCCAM and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, showed that two higher-than-usual doses of silymarin were no better than placebo for chronic hepatitis C in people who had not responded to standard antiviral treatment.

The 2008 Hepatitis C Antiviral Long-Term Treatment Against Cirrhosis (HALT-C) study, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), found that hepatitis C patients who used silymarin had fewer and milder symptoms of liver disease and somewhat better quality of life but no change in virus activity or liver inflammation.

Hi Paulivicky. I have Cirrhosis too, and had read somewhere that Milk Thistle was good to take, so I bought a bottle. I asked my Doctor before taking any though and he said No! They Do have trace alcohol, it should say on the bottle?, but he said any amount, regardless of how small, is a No-no. I'd be very cautious if I was you and try to

-Sorry Paulvicky, pressed the wrong button there!, I was just saying I'd be cautious. Not all Doctors know as much as pharmacists about certain vitamin supplements. But -anything- that contains alcohol At All, I'd stay well clear of.

Good Luck

Milk thistle can help some people with mild liver inflammation, but to a certain extent it depends on the cause of the liver disease and how bad it is. As Pensylvania above quotes, it doesnt help people with active viral hepatitis, but it can help with mild cases of liver inflammation (ie a normal healthy person with no underlying disease could take them to 'help the liver recover after drinking or overindulging etc). They are not a magic cure pill for those of us with end stage liver disease, or for those already taking pharma meds for side effects of liver disease or other health conditions.

I took Milk Thistle for a while at the early stages of diagnosis, but there was so much else going on in my liver apart from inflammation it made no difference to my ALT levels so I stopped. You can get Milk Thistle in other forms apart from in an alcohol base, but I agree with Pensylvania, dont take a product dispensed in alcohol if you have liver disease.

The best supplement is Liv52, a product of HIMALAYA drug company.

himalayahealthcare.com

Liv52 can be used in following conditions:

In the prevention and treatment of

Viral hepatitis

Alcoholic liver disease

Protein energy malnutrition

Loss of appetite

Radiation and chemotherapy-induced liver damage

As an adjuvant with hepatotoxic drugs

A valuable adjuvant during convalescence and prolonged illness

Anabolic steroid use

Heavy alcohol use

Hi yougeektube. I don't know about all of the conditions you list, but I do know that nothing treats Hep C except standard pharmaceutical treatment. I see the website advocates it treats Hep B as well. Sorry yougeektube but it wont, the only thing that treats Hep B is direct acting antivirals.

This sounds a little like snake oil, lol!

Hi, I've been taking milk thistle in various forms for years. I used to drink regularly and it was a well known preventative/curative in wine circles-some people swear by it! However, regular use of it didn't stop me getting some drink related liver problems although it's impossible to say if they lessened the severity? In Italy-globe artichoke based products such as bitters are widely used for general liver disorders..it may all be quackery but there's generally a bit of truth behind herbal remedies. Milk thistle as bolly says is not scienticifically proved to assist with serious liver disease but there's a lot of anecdotal evidence in that it's helpful with some of the associated symptoms such as digestive problems. Whilst I wouldn't recommend the alcohol based milk thistle for obvious reasons I don't think the capsules would do any harm and they may be helpful-alternatively you could try artichokes if you like them-as they may lessen some symptoms and help with cholesterol if that's an issue...

cheers and good luck

If you are directing your rather rude comment to me, yougeektube, I'm here to offer support to people. You, on the other hand, seem to be promoting to vulnerable people a product with dubious health benefits.

Explain to me how Liv52 can 'prevent' (words taken from its advertising) someone being infected by a blood borne hepatitis virus?

Explain to me how its ingredients of capers, chicory, arjuna, coffee, yarrow and tamarisk can treat viral hepatitis.

Post a link to published medical reports with statistics showing the number of people who have cured their Hep C and Hep B with these plants compared to statistics for those people who have cured their Hep C with interferon and those who have suppressed (you cant 'cure' chronic Hep B) with anti-virals.

Then I might be convinced by this product's benefits to those with viral hepatitis.

I just want to tell you that I am not advertising Liv52 and I have no reason to do so. You can search the Internet (if you know how to) about it and find out its real benefits regarding diseases of the Liver including Hep C and B, but if you are here to criticize without know the reality of LIV52, I have nothing to say.

Bolly in reply to yougeektube

I have searched the medical journals published on the internet, yougeektube, and Liv52 has been shown to help livers damaged by alcohol, and livers in rats and mice.

What I'm disagreeing with is the statement that it can PREVENT people becoming infected with Hepatitis B, or Hepatitis C. I also disagree with the statement that it can TREAT Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C, implying that it can cure 'C' or suppress 'B'. These are statements in the advertising and promotion on the product on its website. This is not true.

I tried this for over a year; no benefit at all. I wouldn't bother :)

I have Nash and asked my doctors at Kings in London about milk thistle .They said they have people on their books with liver disease through taking milk thistle. So be very aware.
