Back pain from ascites?

Hubby is currently in hospital. He’d blown up like a balloon over the past week and pain in his back made it impossible to sleep or move. He’s a small guy. All the medical staff keep asking if he’s had any chest pains, difficulty breathing or abdominal pain. He’s had none of those symptoms. Just extreme back pain. He had a drain started, less than a litre was removed before the needle fell out. I’m hoping they finish it tomorrow. He weighed 125lbs two weeks ago and weighed over 150 when admitted.

My main concern is the back pain. He’s never experienced pain like this. He had a hip replaced in May and was walking a kilometre with a cane 5 weeks later.

Anyone else have this problem?

Whereabouts in the back is the pain? Pain around the liver, gallbladder and pancreas can refer up into the back and right shoulder.

This is low back, just above the hips.
