Hello IQ1966. I don't have any really experience of ascites as I don't suffer from it, but I do know that if it's serious and make the abdomen swell to much for comfort, it can be drained. The best people to speak to are the nurses at your hospital, or of the liver Trust, you can contact them through this website. I do have alot of experience with varices, and I can tell you that banding may be an ongoing thing for quite sometime. I have had 6 endoscopy procedures including 3 banding sessions, with a total of around 12 vessels banded. This is over a period of 2 years, but my last banding was in August 21, so the others have been checks, andI've been doing reasonably well that way since. There is always the worry of another catastrophic bleed, but with constant reassurance from my team, I am beginning to come to terms with it all and get on with my life. It's important for your dad and you, the doctor answers as truthfully as possible, I'm sure you need and want to know, I know I do. My recent gastric and hepatic appointments were lengthy for that reason, and I'm fortunate to have a kind team. Good luck and I hope your dad will be OK.
Please don't confuse end stage liver disease with end of life disease.End stage liver disease is the alternative name for cirrhosis and "chirrosis" is more of a discription of the livers poor condition than it is a specific disease.
Symptoms and complications are what counts and if these are kept under control (like banding etc) he can be reasonably OK.
