A couple of years ago when I was particularly unwell, my 1st paracentesis was scary, a bit unknown. The pain reducing injection was was a sharp sting, but nothing worse. Insertion of the the drain tube felt "uncomfortable" but nothing worse. During the drain over several hours they also replenished albumen via a drip. Overall, no real pain or complications. My 1st paracentesis drained 21 litres, which caused me intense pain after the procedure.

The hepatic nurses were great and explained that my major organs had been displaced to a large degree due to the ascites. They assured me things would return to normal over 48 hours, which they did. Had several smaller paracentesis procedures, but eventually Spironolactone and Furosemide meds helped.

Hope this helps you and others.
