Advice on best testing

I have been diagnosed with NAFLD, and like many i dont fit the bill, I am not overweight, have a healthy diet and I am fit, have not had a drink in a couple of years. Heres the thing, I was in Hospital for a while, Gastric problems. While there they did a CT, MRI and ultrasound for my stomach but will have included the liver. I had 3 months of slightly raised liver tests across the board, but still within normal regions. I have had 3 Fibroscans each with different Cap and fibrosis scores. Im confused, the Fibroscans seem to confirm NAFLD, bloods do not, nor does it seem standard ultrasound, MRI, CT etc. I dont want to get another CT due to radiation but I do want to try and confirm how much of my liver is fat, would an MRI be the best alternative? I have cut out all bad aspects of a diet, ie no sugars, medications, I have lost 5 kg and I am fit yet every 3 months when i get the Fibroscan I am rewarded with worse figures. I had 2 done recently and the variation from the same machine was quite high so I am left unsure as which is the figure i go with. Any advice apart form a needle bio, what is the next best imaging for me to see the extent of fat and or damage.

Hi,

Are you under the care of a hepatology team to investigate the cause of the fat in the liver and to ascertain any level of fibrosis?

If you are in the UK you are welcome to call our nurse led helpline for a chat, its open Mon to Fri 10am to 3pm.

Best wishes.

yes, but they seem unable to answer my questions to be honest, they don't know why its not improving or why so many different readings, can i call even if I am not based in the UK right now?

Unfortunately we can only answer UK calls due to our insurance. Hopefully your senior consultant can clarify matters for you.

Best wishes.

I am in a similar situation I’ve never drank , healthy weight and fit . I had a gastroscopy for gastritis which I’m being treated for but it showed portal hypertension in oesophages and stomach .

They then did a ct scan and it showed liver disease and then an mri which I get the results this week .

For me personally I would have every test done to see what has caused this and also treatment .

I feel it’s too important to choose what tests I have so I’m putting all my trust in the doctors .

If I was you I’d do the same as they are the professionals and it is their job to help .

Good luck
