Currently in hospital recovering after an episode of HE. Not nice. As cites was a breeze compared to this. Did not know what time it was day month or year.

I was also asked to name the British prime minister. I couldn’t despite keenly following politics all my life

On the mend now

There is a test that the hospital should be carrying out called The West Haven Score. This is a sort of assessment that is carried out to find out the amount of brain damage that's being done.

Some HE can be temporary, although the brain is unable to repair its self like the liver, it can rewire it’s self to a certain degree. But, if HE goes untreated for too long, then sadly the damage can be permanent.

I have met several people who have suffered from HE (and I include myself in this) that family members and their spouses have said, that their personality has changed. I for my part still suffer from certain mental issues five years post-liver transplant. Brain fog is common, and I also have issues with writing.

I wish you good luck, and please ask about the West Haven Score: gpnotebook.com/simplepage.c...

Good Luck

Richard

I'm glad to hear this. But please bare in mind that episodes of HE can happen at any time. If you drive, you MUST by law inform the DVLA. Now that you have been diagnosed with HE, your insurance is nolonger valid if you were to drive.

This is one of the reasons why the West Haven Score is so important. by testing you now, and the again in six months time, it would show if you were fit enough to drive again.

Pleased to hear you are on the mend. HE is quite terrifying especially for onlookers. My husband was convinced the extractor fan in the bathroom was playing music and monkies were flying through the trees. He was successfully treated in hospital with lactulose but his nurse told me he could definately see the firing squad at the bottom of his bed !! Sounds amusing now but at the time it was anything but.

All the best.

Hi 200987, I had several HE episodes in the year before by transplant and all ending up in hospital with one really bad turn that lasted 2 days and I was told by my husband that I was cursing and swearing in A&E, which is totally not me!! We laugh now at my answer to the question What is your name, after about a minute I came back with 'I'm sure it starts with P'. You should have now been prescribed lactulose or similar, please keep taking the prescribed dosage as you need to get rid of the toxins out your body. 2 years later I am back working full time, I sometimes forget things but that could be an age thing.

Hi

I suffered with HE being hospitalised a few times, while ill I lost the ability to write (Apparently not uncommon)

Since my transplant I find writing and spelling (even on the computer a problem).

I miss words I thought I had written out and cannot see the mistakes and forget how to spell, often after I sent them out

Everything has to be triple checked
