Hi, well the answer to that one is ...plenty!!! Started about a year Pre transplant, got to the point I was always short of breath as the fluid compressed the lungs so much. Unable to walk any distance and only one flight of stairs!!
I was drained 4 times in a year, max of 2 litres each time although on my last one they took off 2 litres, leaving another 2 there, which came out during transplant process.
It was the bane of my life for the majority of my illness, possibly the one debilitating symptom I had.
Tried to control it through diuretics, but never got a full grasp of it.
I could always tell when I needed draining, it was just a case of having to try to persuade a and e doctors that’s what I needed!!
Come back to me if you need more info.
Andy.
Thanks for your feed back , my husband is not have suffering from any effects , has had this for over 12months . He is on diuretics at a moment , Control ascetic very well .
From his XRay the water in the lung does not appear the change Much ,
I would like to know if it goes away , as Doctor said it will go slowly .
Hi, I had a near death experience with pleural effusion. I could hardly walk to the bathroom without gasping for breath. My consultant admitted me to hospital for it drained and all went well 6.5 litres in all, whilst recovering I got my first call to say a liver was available. Went home two days later felt ok for one day then breathless again.Admitted back into hospital again. Because my blood wasn't clotting I had to have some IV drugs I was just on the last bag of four when my throat closed up and I couldn't breathe.
My poor mum was sat outside while doctor after doctor came in I had to have Furosemide by IV.
I eventually went for my lung drained and another 6.5 litres removed, I couldn't believe that it had filled up again so quickly. I went on the respiratory ward where my oxygen levels were so low the poor nurse thought she was going to have to do CPR on me on her first shift back after five years.
I thought just what else is going to happen today when I got told another liver was available so off I went to Leeds attached to an oxygen tank and had my transplant the next afternoon.
I am so frightened of getting this bloody Covid because that feeling of gasping for breath is terrifying I'm not scared of dying but I don't want to go like that.
