This condition is known as fatty infiltration of liver. It is also called fatty liver, fatty metamorphosis, or steatosis of the liver. Fatty infiltration could be diffuse or focal in nature. In case of diffuse fatty infiltration, there is an excessive accumulation of triglycerides in the entire liver.

It means you have excess fatty build up in the liver, a healthy liver shouldn't be fatty but in the case of fatty liver it means there is a build up of fat in the liver tissue.

Fatty liver disease is the fastest growing cause of liver damage in the western world and has over taken alcohol as the leading cause in many countries.

If you drink alcohol it would be wise to reduce your intake. If you don't drink then the cause is labelled Non Alcohol Related Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) and shouldn't be ignored. It is possible to reduce this fatty build up to prevent it from getting worse but this often requires lifestyle, diet and exercise change.

You'll find good advice about NAFLD at:- britishlivertrust.org.uk/in...

Thank you for the prompt reply

Hi,

If you do have a diagnosis of NAFLD, and are in the UK, NICE (The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) have devised guidelines with the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) that state people diagnosed with NAFLD should have further testing to assess for their risk of fibrosis- stiffening or scarring in the liver.

The specific blood tests are Fib-4 score blood test or an Enhanced Liver Fibrosis (ELF) blood test. A specific scan called a FibroScan also estimates fibrosis.

You may want to discuss this with your own GP who will be able to look up the NICE guidance.

Thank you for the reply.I was referred because of slightly raised Gamma, cholesterol 7 and and triglyceride of 2.5 (I have been put on statins) all other blood tests and examination unremarkable, it was suspected as NAFL, however the wording “diffuse hepatic fatty infiltration” concerns me as it sounds more serious. It has been recommended I have a fibroscan.

I will ask about theNICE guidance.

I am 55 years old and my BMI is 25, I’m hoping to turn this around with a lifestyle change.

Many thanks.
