Hi
I have been drinking herbal teas and the occasional tonic water thinking I'm being healthy cutting back on caffeine and stopping alcohol....but just read this may also affect your liver?
What is safe to drink, other than water?!
Many thanks

Where have you heard that either of these things are damaging to your liver? I know there were potential difficulties with green tea extract which is different than drinking a herbal tea. A good few folk with liver related cramps take tonic water.
My hubby (with cirrhosis) drinks ordinary tea, coffee (which is supposed to be good for the liver), milk, water, sugar free soft drinks & no one has told us any different - hubby has been under a liver specialist dietician.

Hi KatieThank you for your reply. I read it on Google somewhere - not the most reliable source!
I can chill out a bit then, thank you.
Hi Daisy,
Here are links to our Diet and liver disease publication ( we are updating this so do look for the new version next year), complementary and alternative medicines page and our 2016 report on coffee and the liver:

As always, please get specific guidance from your own doctors.
HI Daisy, It is possible that some herbal teas may not be good for those with liver disease, just as some herbs might not be.
Possibly your pharmacist might have that information.
Not sure where you are - our pharmacies are all open and have time to give answers here in the US.
Since it seems you have access to the internet you could try to look up herbs that can harm the liver or herbs to stay away from with cirrhosis, but I would start with your doctor or pharmacy first.
Best Wishes,
Mary
