I was recently diagnosed with Liver Fibrosis 8.4 and then Covid19 hit so there hasn’t been any follow up. I seem to have more pain than before the diagnosis! Is thus psychosomatic or has it progressed? I don’t know what to do for the pain as apparently Paracetamol are bad for the liver?? Any ideas? Thanks!

The liver itself doesn't have pain receptors so the liver doesn't give off pain. The liver is enclosed in a membrane called the glisson's capsule and if your liver is enlarged or inflamed it can stretch this membrane and that can cause discomfort.

What were your blood results saying when you had your fibroscan? Were any of your inflammation markers raised ?(ALT, AST)

I am hoping you are not drinking and have been doing what you can as regards attempts to look after your liver.

I don't like to say people are imagining symptoms but sometimes when you are a little obsessed or worried about a condition you can sometimes experience physical symptoms brought about by the anxiety. I know it is difficult but you need to try and focus on something else and hopefully these twinges will fade.

As regards pain medication this is something you need to run past your own medical team BUT paracetemol in reduced doses is actually permitted and indeed prescribed by liver units. My hubby has cirrhosis and is permitted to take it for headaches, pain after banding etc. and was prescribed it whilst an inpatient in liver unit. It's the non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen and tablets like aspirin with blood thinning properties which are the no nos.

Take care, Katie
