Please don't freak out. A smooth muscle antibody (SMA) is a type of antibody known as an autoantibody. Normally, your immune system makes antibodies to attack foreign substances like viruses and bacteria. An autoantibody attacks the body's own cells and tissues by mistake. SMAs attack smooth muscle tissues in the liver and other parts of the body.

It's possible but not definite that you might have some type of auto immune condition. Even if you do have one of these it isn't going to kill you, you need follow up consultations with your doctor to identify what is going on. If it is an auto-immune condition of the liver it is treatable to halt any progression of the condition - usually with steroids and immune suppressant medicines.

You need to discuss this result with your own doctor and see what further testing is planned. Hopefully you are referred to a hospital consultant to further explore and 100% identify what is happening.

Try not to stress, stress can exacerbate symptoms in auto immune conditions.
