Low Platelets........ a Cautionary Tale

Hi All, After my shower this morning, I decided to remove some of the dead skin on the heels of my feet. All went well until I slipped on the closed loo lid, and sliced a sliver of soft skin. I bled like a pig, and tried to stem the flow with tissue. It didn't work ,so I found a plastic bin liner in the bathroom (didn't want to get blood on the carpets) and got the phone to call my friend ( a first responder), but he was on a callout. Not serious enough for 999 or 101, so waited for my wife to return from hospital. My blood just wouldn't clot. Panic over when she got home and put her nurse skills to work. A cautionary tale to all who have very low platelets (mine is 28) be very careful when using those dead skin removers with a razor blade in them. There's no fool like an old fool ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ,

David

Oh you stupid man! Really! What with Miles and his sunscreen aversion and you slicing your skin off for vanity I donโ€™t know what we should do with you both๐Ÿ˜‚. Thank goodness your wife was able to help when she got home.

Having said that my Dad once knocked his leg and scraped it slightly. When the carer got there it looked like a scene from The Chainsaw Massacre. He takes blood thinners.

I sโ€™pose you now have to keep your leg up so canโ€™t get supper tonight either!

Yes Izzy, I feel the complete fool ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š, but it wasn't for vanity, they just had a build up of dead skin round the edges, and my wee dog Teddy (in my photo) likes to try and gnaw them. My Matron wife to the rescue again ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜, don't know what I'd do without her, she's my Angel ๐Ÿ‘ผ๐Ÿ‘ผ๐Ÿ‘ผ Oh no feet up, I be cooking as normal tonight, not sure what though.

You clearly donโ€™t feed Freddy enough if he has to resort to eating your Dead Skin! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ I hope thatโ€™s not what your lovely wifey gets tonight ๐Ÿ˜‚

Izzy you've just given Teddy a new name ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜, and he gets a 3 course meal twice a day ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š,which is more than I do๐Ÿ˜ฅ๐Ÿ˜ฅ๐Ÿ˜ฅ, although he does like dried pigs ears, as a treat๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ˜‹

in reply to davianne

What about pigs feet! Yummy!

in reply to Isabelle2

Izzy - thatโ€™s awful! Awfully funny ๐Ÿ˜

in reply to davianne

What! Freddie gnaw's your feet! What the devil are you teaching the poor we dog! A nice piece of chicken breast chopped into tiny bits with some yummy veg topped with gravy๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜

Trish, if this carries on I'll have to put a notice up in the village to tell everyone that Teddy has changed his name to Freddie. Ted's OK with his 3 course meals, well he's never complained ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

Oh bugger David! Sorry for swearing chaps but I'm glad your ok! ๐Ÿ˜

The best thing for removing skin from base of feet is a Scholl battery operated course skin remover roller from Boots! They come with either a soft or hard sander roller! Mine has the hard sander which I find is brilliant and use every few days then moisturise! Years ago in my spare time ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜… I used to pedicure men and ladies feet โ˜บ๏ธโ˜บ๏ธโ˜บ๏ธ This is another hobbie I mine I have under my umbrella! Lol

Please take care David and others too! X

Oh Trish, What a total Eejit I have been ๐Ÿ˜ฅ๐Ÿ˜ฅ I like the sound of the electric thingy, does it come in industrial size?๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ. There was about an eggcup full of blood all over the bathroom floor, which poor Annie had to clear up after mending me. I think I might try a Pedicure next time, it might be safer.

David,( trying to be the biggest Eegit in the village, and succeeding)

in reply to davianne

I'm glad you said Eegit and not me ! I did think it!๐Ÿ˜… Between you and Pilo I'm starting to think you two shouldn't be left alone ? Men ! ERRRR

I'm so glad Anne arrived home to sort you out before she found you flat on your back! Thats a joke by way! ๐Ÿ˜. Its not funny but your the one in the line light today so Pilo's let off the hook as the saying goes !

Surely if you were operating a dangerous implement you should have been wearing safety work wear, a hard hat and steel toe capped boots. That way you wouldn't have slipped, and your feet would have been protected!!

I'm so glad you have a wonderful wife who can quite literally nurse you back to health.

I thought my platelets were low at 56, but 28 is defo v v low!! Mind you Dr's aren't concerned about mine, said they wouldn't do anything anyway??

Take care, hope that foot gets better soon x

Hi Wass, yep, everybody should have an Annie, when they need medical care๐Ÿ‘ผ๐Ÿ‘ผ๐Ÿ‘ผ .

I try not to wear safety gear when I shower , cause the boots and hard hat get in the way ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ. My low platelets give me nosebleeds, and the other day I actually cut myself with my electric razor๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ. I need full time supervision ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜.

Hi David. Glad that you are ok now :-) I'm very wary of bathrooms now, especially showers :-( :-( When we suffer with our joints we shouldn't try getting into awkward positions. Best to get someone else to see to the feet. Alf

davianne in reply to alfredthegreat

Your absolutely right Alf, I will get my feet done professionally. I had the bath replaced with a large walk-in shower because Annie slipped in the bath, and gave herself a black eye ( she suffers from a deficit of spatial awareness๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜) . When we get old and crotchety, I will have a fold away seat put in. David

David forget scraping your feet with sharp dangerous tools. Buy a tube of ccs cream from the chemist. Cake it on twice daily and wear cotton socks so you DON'T SLIP walking around during the day and in overnight to let the cream get absorbed into your skin. Within a week of using it, my hard skin and chapped heels were as soft as a baby's bum and no blood transfusion required ๐Ÿค—

Hi Laura, Yes I bought a tube of the cream. I used it on the non injured foot and it's definitely working. I think will I still need a chiropodist, as the dead skin is quite thick. I found my trainer socks are ideal after application. I have a US appt tomorrow, so I will see how I get on driving in my sandals.

Thanks Laura, I was told by the sonographer at my last US in March, that my liver was clear of masses, although my spleen was 19 cms. As my Hepatologist, has downgraded me to yearly consultations๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿ˜ , I'm at a loss as to why he requested another US so soon after my last one. I never had a letter giving the results, so I just relying on the sonographer's words..... not happy !!!!!!

Hi Jane, thanks for your concern. Yes my personal Matron is caring for me now. I couldn't believe the amount of blood, it literally looked like a blood bath๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ. I have now bought some ccs cream as Laura suggested, and was tickled to see that it was "suitable for diabetics", and I thought it was only for rubbing in ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜. I will get the dead skin removed professionally in future.

Thanks Dawn, I am normally very careful about cuts, but this was just a slip of my foot whilst using the dead skin remover. My wife found the piece of skin I had removed and it was the size of a 10p. I will now try other methods not involving razor blades..... a lesson learned ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š
