Good morning Tenngirl,

Livatone is not a medication and it is not intended for use in place of medications prescribed by your doctor.

If you have liver disease, it is important to seek advice from your doctor and ask to be referred to a registered dietitian before taking any complementary medicines or dietary supplements. Your doctor or a registered dietitian will have full access to your medical history and be able to offer advice that is specific to you and will not interact with any of your other medications or cause you harm.

You can find information regarding supplementary medicines on the British Liver Trust website. Here you will find researched and trusted information on preventing or/ and living well with liver disease.

Thank you, I don’t have advanced liver disease. I have a fatty liver, but not really sure the extent of it. I’ve had several CT scans and an US and the doctor just says fatty liver. The US did say the liver had a lobular contour which was concerning to me, but not to the hepatologist?? I have been following the Mediterranean diet (but no alcohol) and exercising daily. I have lost 10 lbs, but need to lose about 40 or 50 more.

Sadly this sort of question pops up from time to time, and those who know me know, about my views on the use of supplements. There was a post three months ago called, "“What books are you all reading and recommend” this was by a person called "Fandabby". This is some of what I replied to in my response.

I would never take any supplements for liver disease. Please try and remember that a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing.

The liver is the bodies filtering system. It passes around 2000 litres of blood and filters it 350 times per day.

The liver has a unique capability to restore itself after an inflammation, trauma, poisoning or other stress. It does all this on it's own it doesn't need any help from supplements, and care needs to be taken. You can have a situation where by a persons liver may have insufficient Iron because it's become damaged. Or the reverse can happen, as there is more iron in a damaged cirrhotic liver then in a healthy one. So a person could think that because their liver is damaged, they could try taking Iron supplements, then they run the risk of doing more harm to their liver than good. I would also avoid anything being written by someone from the USA. This is purely because some of the practises, procedures and drugs used over there aren't always available here in the UK. This can then lead to false hopes. I certainly wouldn't take anything that a doctors recommends that will only end up supplementing their own bank account.

Your liver detoxify's the bodies blood, it's works just fine, and is the only organ in the body that has the power to regenerate it's self. When the live does become damaged, there is no wonder drug, no magical cure, just allow your GP to monitor your progress and change your life style. Avoid books that depict a person wearing a white coat with stethoscope around their neck and trying to get you to buy something you don't need.

Ask your doctor to refer you to a dietitian. There are numerous diets and not all are suitable for everyone.

Good Luck. (and leave off the liver supplements - you

Thank you, I have never taken or been a fan of supplements, but heard about Dr. Cabot and saw that Livatone received good reviews on Amazon. I am in the US.

I read her book, a few years afterwards I had a liver transplant. Take advice from a qualified person.

If all the supplements available were of any use, we wouldnt need Drs or Consultants. It is a multi million dollar/pound industry that preys on the sick! My GP went above and beyond when I was diagnosed with ME and Fibro. He really did his homework. He told me, save your money there is zero medical evidence to support any of the claims. This applies to all serious health conditions especially. I have never been tempted by any of these 'miracle' cures. Saved a fortune lol Hazelx
