Hello there, my partner who has decompensated liver cirrhosis and has been home from hospital for 8 week's is starting show signs of HE I think. Over the last couple of days he is sleeping more and quite jerky and I think a little bit confused. I'm struggling to get him to eat and drink but at times he appears quite lucid. My question is how do you deal with this, is it a hospital visit or do you just assume they will come out of it. The last time we had it which was very severe was in hospital and so I didn't really have to deal with it in the home. Luckily I am off this week but also have two children in the house feeling a little bit anxious about it all he is very snappy and I am not able to talk to him without him getting cross at me but then the next second he is eyes closed and muttering. His jaudicr id quite mild and although he has a little ascities it has remained the same so no obvious signs there is anything else going on. Just so seeing how you cope with these episodes at hone. Amongst all his other meds he is on Riafaxin and Lactulose 3 times a day.Thank you in advance Ann

The British Liver Trust guidance on HE and the BLT / HE Passport states:-
" What to do ...if you experience any of these symptoms
HE can be an emergency; it is therefore important to seek advice from your doctor as soon as your symptoms begin.
If you have already been diagnosed with HE and you feel like your condition is getting worse, seek medical help as soon as possible.
If you have moderate-to-severe symptoms of HE, ask to be taken to A&E or call 999 right away. These symptoms can lead to a coma if they’re not treated quickly."

Hello,
AyrshireK is absolutely correct. It is absolutely essential to seek medical advice as mild encephalopathy can quickly become more severe. It may be that he has an infection/dehydrated/constipated etc - any of these things can cause it as you probably know.
