If you have a known diagnosis of cirrhosis that puts you at F4 (Fibrosis 4 - a.k.a. cirrhosis a.k.a. end stage liver disease).

Cirrhosis is then split into 4 categories which are based upon symptoms present.

Compensated Cirrhosis

Stage 1 - No Varices / No Ascites

Stage 2 - Varices / No Ascites

Decompensated Cirrhosis

Stage 3 - Ascites + / - Varices

Stage 4 - Bleeding + / - Ascites.

You can't tell from blood counts.

Thank you. It helped me to understand more too.

Hi jacq1976,

I think Katie did a good job with her explanation.

My husband has liver disease, but we live in the US and his liver doctor doesn't talk about what stage he is, just that he is doing well - thankfully.

Your doctor should also be able to give you more accurate information regarding your specific case if you want to know more precisely.

Best wishes,

Mary
