There's probably no need to avoid it.

Dr. Melissa Palmer's Guide To Hepatitis and Liver Disease:

"Turmeric (Curcuma domestica) is the main ingredient in Indian curry powder. For thousands of years, this herb has been used by India's practitioners of traditional Ayurvedic medicine as a cure for liver disease. The herb's active component is the yellow pigment curcumin. This herb is proclaimed to have antioxidant properties. In experimental animal studies, it has been shown to inhibit liver damage from aflatoxin and other liver toxins. It might, therefore, be concluded that the Indian population has a lower incidence of liver disease than the rest of the world, but this has not been demonstrated."

It is extremely good for fatty liver. In order for it to be the most rewarding for your system it must be combined with black pepper (active compound in pepper allows it to stay in your blood longer, to put it simply, and be more effective) and eaten with a healthy form of fat for better absorption. For it to be beneficial you need to eat large amounts though.

I personally add a teaspoon to a low sodium broth, a quarter teaspoon of black pepper, cayenne (capsaicin is also good for detoxifying your blood and therefore any liver disease) and a teaspoon of organic coconut oil. I cut the bitterness of the turmeric by either adding a good amount of lemon/lime or Apple cider vinegar with the mother (unpasteurized)

You could also saute some cruciferous veggies, such as broccoli, on low heat in a tablespoon of a healthy oil, and add all of the above, as well as garam masala. Mince some garlic and leave for 10 minutes so the allicin has time to form (another beneficial compound) I add organic almond/coconut milk after a few minutes of cooking my spices with my ingredients. Its packed with good vitamins and is a good choice to make more of a curry like dish. Since you're from South Asia, I'm sure you would probably find a better way to utilize the ingredients than I would.

There are also capsules you can take with various doses of curcumin...which is the active ingredient in turmeric that is what has been proven to help in studies. Like I said though...needs to be taken with a healthy fat. Sometimes the capsules will actually include the active compound in black pepper. I believe it's called poivrine or pepperine? To be absorbed into the blood stream.

Like I said spicy peppers are great as well. Capsaicin does wonders for your entire body.

Turmeric is excellent for the liver and will do you no harm whatsoever. As Caseypink1990 said, it's best to combine it with black pepper to get the full benefit, and she's also correct that raw apple cider vinegar containing 'the mother' is very beneficial. Go forth and enjoy :)

Hello, I’m curious, do you know if Turmeric is okay for those with liver disease I have a vague memory of reading it once before, or perhaps that was milk thistle, any knowledge to share on either?

Cheers
