Hi, I haven't commented for quite a while as we are very busy looking after family with illnesses. MIL is at the moment in hospital, she was very confused and doing some bizarre things. Mil has decompensated Cirrhosis of the liver, non alcoholic. She had ascites in 2015 and had 12 litres fluid drained away. she has kept quite well for the past few years but lately has had a few stays in hospital. She was taken off fursemide a few years ago as it was making her very confused and not good for her. When she went into hospital the last time they put her back on fursemide, we aren't yet sure if this caused her recent confusion, but they have taken her off it again. MIL was taken off spironolactone and morphine as they said her liver wasn't breaking it down, they are now slowly giving her spironolactone again and are trying to stabilise her liver. We don't know what her prognosis is or if this is going to get better, has anyone else been in this situation and been able to get back to some kind of healthy. My MIL is 71. Thank you Gina

Hi Gina,

I see from past posts that you were considering getting your mother in law assessed for Hepatic Encephalopathy (HE) Did her specialist ever diagnose her with that?

The British Liver Trust have a useful publications on both cirrhosis of the liver and HE that you may find useful to read, here are the links;

We hope that is helpful,

Best wishes

Hi trust, yes Jean has been diagnosed with HE, she is being assessed in hospital at the minute as some of the medication she is taking was not being broken down by her liver. She isn't as confused now but we are still awaiting results as to what comes next. We feel that she isn't very well at the minute, with her being 71 with de compensated liver and other problems, included banded varices and an ulcer that is being treated, we worry that she will struggle to come back from this.. thank you for your reply Gina.

Hi Gina,

Maybe you could consider requesting another appointment with your MIL's specialist and inform them of any changes you have noticed and ask them to review her?

It is so postive to read how much you support your MIL,

Warm wishes

Thank you for your reply. MIL is going home tomorrow as they said she is back at baseline ( no confusion and bloods stable) So good news, we will hopefully now get her back on track and speak to consultant.
