GGT 113, ALT 92. Scared!

My AST, bilirubin and all those other things are normal. I drink about a bottle of wine a week normally. A glass here or there when I read. The smaller bottle! And I'm 23!

I never party but on a Friday I was invited to a party and had three shots of vodka and a glass of wine.

Then that weekend I had my normal bottle of wine.

And Monday morning I got my blood work done.

Normally it is just the bottle a week! Could it just be the one weekend of extra drinking!

All my friends drink way more than me, I'm so scared my liver is failing. I know people at the party who had 6-7 shots and they do that every weekend and drink beer all week, every week!

Could the one weekend of extra drinking do it? Or is my liver super damaged!

Good morning,

Sorry that you are worried about your liver health.

The causes of liver disease are many, alcohol use is just one way your liver can be harmed. From what you have said, you don't seem to be drinking excessively, but its good that you are aware that a sensible approach to alcohol is always going to be a good thing.

It is not for anyone on this site to attempt to interpret any blood or test results that you may have. That is for you to discuss with whoever arranged for the tests. The general rule as set by the British Liver Trust, who moderate this forum, is that we are a support group and not here to provide specific medical opinion as non of us are qualified to do so. Only your doctor has access to your medical history and is able to see the complete picture.

If you refer to the British Liver Trust website, you will find almost everything you need to know about liver disease and its causes, symptoms and treatment. The site will help you to understand how you can make sure that you keep healthy generally and specifically enjoy a future without liver issues. Everything you find there is factual and properly validated /researched - a site you can use with confidence and trust.

From what you have said about the drinking habits of your friends, it might be a good idea to also give them a pointer in the direction of thinking about their liver health.

In the meantime, get an appointment with whoever ordered your tests and discuss your worries and concerns. Try not to worry too much, you've already made the right move by asking for advice and support.

Take care,

Jim

What I have come to understand through my studies and health issues is that we differ on the inside as much as we do in the outside. People can ger used to drinking as their liver tries to cope with the alcohol. Everyone's LIVER OR body and enzymes differ. You can't compare yourself to others in this way.

I know big and small people that eat fatty and rich food and have no issues with it. In fact their bloods are all perfectly normal.

Others have the healthiest diet and a can't tolerate a glass of beer or a can of coke.

Your liver needs lots of proteins (eggs are excellent) to produce and replace the enzymes it depleted. If people don't eat the minimum nutrients and drink on top of that, than their liver struggles.

Greens are very helpful (chard etc)

Lots of water before and after drinking

Lots of fibre (psyllium husks, oats, millet, spelt and teff flour as well as dark green lentils are excellent) to absorb the toxins and eliminate them from your body.

Good luck and do tell your friends there's no fun in being a drinking hero and pay with your health or life.
