Even though she has a grade 1 tumour, 11 out of 16 nodes in the axilla are positive, which means chemotherapy and radiation are ideally necessary. However, she needs to be assessed by a Medical Oncologist to see if she can tolerate chemotherapy. If she can, she must definitely undergo chemotherapy followed by radiation. Sometimes, in women above 70 in whom other problems are also there, milder forms of chemotherapy are given, so that side effects are less and we get some benefit.

I suggest you meet your Medical Oncologist and let her be assessed by him / her.

My spouse who is 70 has gone thru chemotherapy and radiation and will be having last dose( ie 17th) of Herceptine. By god grace she has been able to go thru it all without adverse effects .

Dear Japji,

Sorry to hear about your moms diagnosis.

She would need

1. Staging CT scan Chest Abdomen Pelvis ( if affording may do a PET scan)

A review by the Medical Oncologist at PGI Chandigarh will be helpful, and in all probability she may be advised Adjuvant Chemotherapy & Radiotherapy. She will also need Hormonal Manipulation treatment with Letrozole for 5 years after these former treatments.

As Sumeet rightly pointed out, the medical oncologist will take utmost precautions by getting few tests like 2D ECHO, ECG before deciding on the right chemotherapy and may suggest a moderate treatment and not be too agressive.

If you can afford the PORT, that makes life much easier for patients and i m sure there are few blogs/posts on PORT its advantages and disadvantages plus few patient experiences you ll find on this forum somewhere, but drip is also reasonable and straight forward provided the chemotherapy is attempted in a experienced high volume centre, where there are trained chemotherapy nurses who administer and cannulate you for 6 times (thats the number of cycle of chemo your medical oncologist may suggest).

Wish you and your mum,

All the best for the upcoming treatments to come !

hope it all goes smooth for her.

Dose and all other things will be calculated by your oncologist. We understand your concern. But we wish you to know that we are here to help people cope up with chemo and other things. We cannot replace a doctor and it would be incorrect to make any medical comments without assessing patient. For three different patients with same age height and weight, the dose of chemo can be different. So just by knowing the height and weight, I cannot tell you the dose of chemotherapy.

My request henceforth is, please understand this is a support group. This is not a place for medical opinions or second opinions. We appreciate your concerns and advise you to take them up with your Oncologist.
